i can't stop
Leo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So you're leaving
In the morning
On the early train
I could say everything's alright
I could pretend and say good bye

Got your ticket
Got your suitcase
Got your leaving smile

I could say that's the way it goes
I could pretend and you won't know
That I was lying
'Cause I can't stop loving you
I can't stop loving you
No, I can't stop loving you

Though I try
Took a taxi
To the station
Not a word was said
I saw you walk across the road
Maybe the last time, I don't know

Feeling humble
I heard a rumble
On the railway track
And when I hear the whistle blow
I walk away and you don't know

That I was lying
'Cause I can't stop loving you
No, I can't stop loving you
I can't stop loving you
Though I try

'Cause I can't stop loving you
I can't stop loving you

No, I can't stop loving you
Though I try

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Leo Sayer's "I Can't Stop" express the deep and bittersweet emotions of a person who is struggling to accept the end of a relationship. The song reveals the internal conflict of the singer, who attempts to put on a brave face for his departing lover, although his feelings are too strong and raw to conceal.

The first verse describes the singer's realization that his loved one is leaving on the early train, and despite his attempts to feign nonchalance, everything is not alright. He knows that he can pretend to bid her farewell, but he cannot pretend to forget his deep feelings for her. In the second verse, the singer takes a taxi to the station with his partner, and the silence between them underscores the pain of their unspoken goodbye. The singer knows that chance might bring them together again but cannot shake off his deep-seated love for her.

The chorus repeats the phrase "I can't stop loving you", emphasizing the emotional force that the singer is grappling with. The final verse is more resigned, as the singer hears the train's whistle and walks away, accepting that he cannot predict the future or control his feelings. In conclusion, Leo Sayer's "I Can't Stop" is a heart-wrenching reflection on the difficulty of letting go of love.

Some songs just have that quality to stir our emotions ❤

I first heard this song as a little boy in 1980. It will always remain as emotional for the next 100 years just as it was when it was first released in the 70s. That's when music was realistic and meaningful. I'm blessed to have lived in such an era.

@Derwentcub

Tactile and very talented performer. I have seen him live three times, and his interaction with the audience was incredible. A real man of the people and caring guy.

I never knew Phil Collins merely covered it, always thought song was his

But glad I found this out because this is absolutely beautiful

Danny Deleto written by Billy Nicholls

This is also a cover. It isn't Sayer's either.

@BigMeech1

@KTK Thanks, I thought it's Leo Sayer's. Been lying to all my friends and my wife whenever they play Phil Collins' 🤭🤣🤣🤣

@Deshanhiralall

Phil Collins is a remarkable singer / song writer himself and for the fact that he covered a song of another musician it goes to show that Leo Slayer was a superior musician. The finest at the time.

@roadlizardcu8664

Actually his is a cover of Leo Sayers version which is also a cover of the original by White Horse.
