Marie

The lyrics to Leo Ferre's song "Marie" are a combination of poetic verses and nostalgic references that evoke memories of the past. The song speaks of unrequited love and the pain and longing associated with it. The first verse talks about a young girl dancing, asking if she will continue to dance when she is older. The dancing is described as "maclotte", a traditional French dance that involves jumping and skipping, and the bells will ring to indicate the jubilant mood of the occasion. The singer is asking when Marie will return and expressing his desire to love her fully, even though it hurts him to do so.
The second verse uses imagery of snow and soldiers passing through to convey the fleeting nature of life, love, and the human heart. The singer notes that his heart is fickle, changing constantly, and he does not know the destination of Marie's cascading hair or the future of their promises. The final verse brings the singer to the banks of the Seine River, but even this calming setting cannot soothe his pain. He questions when the week will end, suggesting that time passes too slowly when one is consumed with longing.
Overall, the song's lyrics express the complicated emotions of love, loneliness, and the ever-present passage of time, beautifully intertwined with poetic language and vivid imagery.
