He is known for a fingerpicking style that draws on blues, jazz, and folk music, and for syncopated, polyphonic melodies. He overcame a series of personal obstacles, including partial loss of hearing and a nearly career-ending bout with tendon damage in his right hand, to emerge as a widely recognized master of his instrument. He currently resides in the Minneapolis area with his family.
Focusing primarily on instrumental composition and playing, Kottke also sings sporadically, in an unconventional yet expressive baritone described by himself as sounding like "geese farts on a muggy day".[1] In concert, Kottke intersperses humorous and often bizarre monologues with vocal and instrumental selections from throughout his career, played solo on 6- and 12-string guitars.

Ya sure got that punch line about master picker Kottke dying way past me. Got so scared (from master picker insecurity syndrome) and sad I went to Wiki:

I love this album! Such good memories, circa 72-73. Living in the servant's quarters above the carriage house of an old mansion close to downtown - turned apartments. Rent was $50, for a 3 bedroom place, with a kitchen, living room, the 3 bedrooms, bathroom and sleeping porch. Good times!! Between the 4 of us, each portion of rent was $12.50!

I remember seeing Leo play this on Merv Griffin's show way back when. Swear to God! Merv's band was completely stunned by this performance. Merv was just Merv. "Well, thank you, Leo." I wonder if this clip is floating around out there

Y'know, I'm so glad someone else made mention of a Leo appearance on Merv's show! I would have loved to see the program you're talking about - it was in '76, right? I saw him on Merv in Jan. '79, plugging his "The Best" anthology release.
