He is known for a fingerpicking style that draws on blues, jazz, and folk music, and for syncopated, polyphonic melodies. He overcame a series of personal obstacles, including partial loss of hearing and a nearly career-ending bout with tendon damage in his right hand, to emerge as a widely recognized master of his instrument. He currently resides in the Minneapolis area with his family.
Focusing primarily on instrumental composition and playing, Kottke also sings sporadically, in an unconventional yet expressive baritone described by himself as sounding like "geese farts on a muggy day".[1] In concert, Kottke intersperses humorous and often bizarre monologues with vocal and instrumental selections from throughout his career, played solo on 6- and 12-string guitars.

Saw him do this very song in Boulder, CO in 1982. The place went balistic when he finished up. Amazing work!!

Bought My Feet Are Smiling at Black Sedan Records in Manchester England in 1975 when I was 16 purely because I liked the cover! Best record purchase I have ever made and Leo's music has brought so much happiness to me ever since. American music at it's very best

I bought this Album when I was living in Alberta in 1976. I have worn out 4 copies since then. I still have the first one I bought, and other than the odd scratch, it still plays pretty good. I am a guitar player and have been since I was young, but never have I attained this kind of talent, Was lucky enough to see Leo in Ottawa in 79 or 80.

Leo is all heart underneath his droll humour and naturally self deprecating style.......his playing is loaded with warmth, humanity and all the emotions we love to feel, whenever we hear beautiful music played this well. His right hand technique is unique with the index and 2nd finger coming way back under the thumb, and often playing the 4th , 3rd and even 5th string between the thumbed primary beats, to create those complex rhythms he has mastered so perfectly. Maybe it is a stroke of good fortune he can't play quite so quick anymore because many people can hear and see those fingers better and so a few talented ones may carry on at least some parts of his style, after he is gone . I heard him in Sydney at the Town Hall I think, where I also heard Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee. I bought My Feet Are Smiling on order from the USA . June Bug , Louise and Bach's hymn being three lifelong favourites . He has given the world a unique and wonderful body of guitar playing that may never be equalled in that style . My admiration for him is boundless. ( and I too have tendonitis all through my 4 limbs and carpal tunnel plus 12 torn tendons in the past in both hands and wrists...which makes guitar playing hard work these days. But Leo, he does it on a 12 string like it was a toy banjo...very strong hands indeed. )

He always seems to play his own songs too fast. Glad he's old enough to slow down now.
