The thumbnail gave me a huge laugh. About 25 years ago, working at an IT center, we lost connection to another center... the newly IT temp asked what happened... the Wan guy without missing a beat said: "A Shark bit the cable" , out stuff didn't even go over sea :) So it took a few weeks for the temp to realize it. @@anomonyous One of them had a steam engine, but it was only for short in harbor movement. It was primarily sail powered. The other was sail only. This was before any large non-military steam ships were built. At least big enough to carry the extremely heavy cable.

IIRC the Great Eastern was predominantly steam powered with the sails being mostly auxiliary. The paddles were what gave her excellent manoeuvrability.

You might want to go refresh your memory on Wikipedia. Sail power was auxiliary, it had one screw and the side paddles were fairly large.

@@TheKazragore well, relatively speaking compared to later ships they were. Standing next to them they'd feel fairly massive 😂 it's my understanding the sails did just as much at open sea as the steam did. In open ocean having the sails at full with a good wind could allow them to burn 50% less fuel. I also know they'd use the sails for a little move. Much less time consuming and resource intensive to just hoist a couple sails if you need to move her across the harbor quick.

I didn't expect a undersea cable video. I did work on monitoring these cables and yes sharks and fishing lines are one of the factors of outage. There is also under water land slides and earth quakes to blame too. land lines have more crazy reasons for outage so maybe do a video on that too.

@@rsthegoldenfist25 yes for the 99% of the distance from shore to shore the cable just sits on the seabed. protected by the fact that they are in water depths too deep for ship anchors or fishing trawlers. There are a multitude of different tools that will dig a trench and bury the cable inside it. The choice is made depending on the type of soil the cable is to be buried sandy vs clay

Would be interested in seeing a video on underground cable infrastructure or even more in-depth info on lines (not optical fiber) running on above ground utility poles - how they deal with distance and interference from running along side power lines.

Optic fiber lines don't get interference from power lines (that being why they're extensively used in power substations). Regular twisted pair Ethernet cables do, though there's some of them that have shielding to prevent/lessen interference

I spent several years working on one of those cable ships in the 90's as part of the ship's crew (not the cable crew). I went on many repairs as well as projects laying new cable. Everything said here is absolutely true... even the shark story. They actually have a particular type of cable that is known as "Shark Bite" for exactly that reason. When they were pulling up a cable to repair it, it actually had a shark tooth embedded in it! It was cool to see those maps of all the undersea cables around the world, and reminisce of those trips. During the 90's I did see a lot of advancements in undersea fiber technology. It was amazing to see how many fibers they are putting in a single cable and the speeds they can carry now. Wow! Awesome story Linus!

There is a ship that docks here in Victoria BC frequently that does underwater cable repair. I've been on it to check out how they do the repairs and to see the whole setup. They are actually open to people coming and checking it out and seeing it. Pretty interesting ship and really nice guys to meet. They do the ones that cross the pacific ocean

There have been cases where sharks were attracted to the undersea cables because sharks sense electrical pulses in their prey like the heartbeat of a fish or even a human. The electrical pulses in those cables attract them thinking it's a school of fish but it's just a cable. It kind of drives them crazy when they're hungry.

Its also an interesting fact that the metal sheath inside the cable under the insulation carries high voltage electricity too. This is to power the repeaters spliced every few miles into the cable. Sharks chewing on an undersea cable can and have received some nasty jolts from them :)

internet speeds still vary wildly across the transatlantic cables, depending on which one you get routed through (which again depends partially on your ISP). Anywhere from 5 Mbit to 500 Mbit per user (because the speed is limited to avoid oversaturating the connections) but during busy periods that can drop massively. Cross-sea cloud computing with replicating has helped a lot with freeing up the cables and speeding things up for users, because we no longer need to fetch everything from across the pond, but can fetch the a lot of data from a more local data centre.

Massive dc power supplies... The ones for southern cross between New Zealand and hawaii at 15kv at each end and that power about 200 repeaters if my memory serves me right... In 2000 when that was laid it was the longest single run in the world.... And the tech behind the optical repeaters is pretty amazing

Like josh said, very high voltage DC power supplies. Fun fact, one end will supply positive power and the other end negative, so the cable only needs the single conductor (the copper jacket in the image in the video) to power it, and it means there’s no arcing or need to insulate between the two polarities.

I'm proud to say I maintained the TAT-14 cable in sea girt NJ. BTW is cost about 14-16 million to keep ships on standby in case of breaks. Also, cables are not on ocean floor, depends on how deep. Majority of it is suspended. This is why you can't just drop anchors wherever you please.

I work for lumen and i love the naming scheme they have for their cables. for the Atlantic cables its aptly names AC-1, Atlantic crossing 1. and another cable is Yellow. We also have the Red route and the Green route. There is also the Purple Route but its being phased out.

FUN FACT:
When they were laying one of the first cables from the UK to America which was insanely expensive. Half way across the trip they lost the cable and had to restart.

The ship's that carried these cables basically had MASSIVE cable coils that slowly unwound as they went along.

But they tend to be installed and owned increasingly by corporations like microsoft, google and facebook, which aren't renowned for a trusted reputation. For the sake of liberty, satellite internet is a viable alternative and might get even more important in future.

Note that the cables are not usually armored throughout their whole span. Also, satellite constellations will be both lower latency and higher average speeds because, although they have to cover longer distances, they can do so faster due to space being a vacuum (a cable is not a vacuum). Starlink has already shown latencies of 15ms and I wouldn't be surprised if transatlantic latencies regularly stay below 100ms.

Satellite up and down links add long distances to links making cable faster and in stock and commodity trading getting in first, if only by a few milli seconds, can be crucial. Most such international transact-ins are on submarine cables for that reason.

@@Aereto i didnt deny the existence of wired interference, its simply less of a problem than wireless interference. wires have been shielded for quite a while now, its rarely ever a problem for most people with decent cables, wired connections tend to be pretty consistent, and protection against interference tends to matter more with audio cables which are almost always shielded. wireless connections are already inconsistent due to their nature of being wireless, using something like a microwave can cause them to drop out. also why did u have to say "sequestered wavelength frequencies", just say different frequencies.

Undersea cables are buried during lay between 1m and 2m above 800m deep (1200m in certain cases), except cable crossings and Y connections. Then a ROV called a "trencher" does an inspection, burial passes and a final inspection.
Damage is rare but happens, usually an anchor in a place where the map says not to lay anchor. Areas of hard rocky bottom where blocking sea lanes for a rock trencher (big un'slow) is not feasible (Singapore Straits). Or in zones where the cables come to seabed surface to connect to land (Severn Estuary) where it is strictly forbidden to lay anchor, but some still do.
Digging out the repeaters (worth loadsmonay) every 20 years, or when they fails is a big job, as there is one every 80km...
Beyond a certain depth cables are unarmored and not buried as nothing really happens at great depth far from shore.

Video suggestion: Why do PSU manufacturers have so many different wattage versions? I get that parts for a higher wattage PSU's are likely more expensive, but don't the costs of manufacturing, marketing, packaging, logistics, etc. for so many SKU's outweigh the parts costs? If you compare two high quality/efficiency PSU's from the same manufacturer and with the same feature set, but different wattages - does the PSU design really differ? Why not make a small number of higher wattage versions to reduce the customer confusion and impact of getting the wattage choice wrong?

Nice to see SA is in the media and not portraying an arms dealer, mercenary or corruption haha.

As Linus mentioned we did have an outage but it was two separate undersea cables broke and all of SA was heavily isolated. It was a dark few WEEKS. No gaming, companies couldn't access their own servers, all sorts of stuff went awry. As if our constant power outages weren't enough. Haha.

The solar flares are not a problem for the connection but much more likely for your CPU. But we have a simple solution against such happenings: We know 6-12h before impact, that it is coming - because we have satellites 1million km towards the sun, that would be destroyed first. So if that would happen, they would only have to order a shutdown of the electric grid to secure the huge transformators and servers - without electricy in the grip the EMP don't do anything. Yes, the restart could take days, but better days without electricity then months because we had to replace all transformators.

I live on Kauai in Hawaii and around 3 years ago just about the hole island didn't have internet, cable tv or telephones (cell phones still worked) for around 24 hours because our fiber optic cable that is between the two islands got damaged.

4:26 true but compared to submarine cables star link is gonna be lower latency over very large distances. Because light speed in glass like 66.66% of light speed in space.

Starlink is also point to point, mostly. Those cables will typically go through several stops before getting to your house/company, with a bare minimum of 4 stops. Starlink may be as little as two, though three to five is possible.
