Bluebird
Leon Russell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah, I'm lost in the night
The icy wind is howling out your name
And desolation lingers like a fog
The fire is growing dimmer in the wind

I'm out in the rain
The moon has gone behind the cloud again
And I can't stand to live another day
'Cause my bluebird went away

And I'm locked in this room with my sorrow
No escape, no way to get away
And my only connection with tomorrow
Is hoping that you might decide not to stay away

I'm out on a limb
If I could only find sweet love again
To live my life this way is too much to bare
Can't find my bluebird anywhere, anywhere

I'm lost in the night
The icy wind is howling out your name
And desolation lingers like a fog
The fire is growing dimmer with the wind

I'm out in the rain
The moon has gone behind the cloud again
I can't stand to live another day
Bluebird, why did you go away?

Tell me, bluebird, why did you go away?

Little bluebird, why did you go away?
Won't you tell me?

Overall Meaning

Leon Russell's song "Bluebird" is a lament about a love that has gone away. The lyrics set an eerie, desolate mood, with the singer trapped in a room with his sorrow after his "bluebird," his lover, has left him. He is lost in the night, with the icy wind howling her name, and he cannot escape his pain. He pleads with his bluebird to come back to him, asking her why she left and unable to find her anywhere. He is out on a limb, longing for sweet love again, as living like this is too much to bear.

The repeated imagery of the wind and the rain add to the feeling of hopeless despair, as does the line "And my only connection with tomorrow is hoping that you might decide not to stay away." The chorus is a straightforward declaration of his longing for his bluebird and his inability to live without her. Russell's voice, with its raw, emotional quality, perfectly captures the pain and loneliness of the singer.

"Bluebird" is a masterpiece of soulful blues rock, with Russell's gravelly voice and gritty piano playing driving the song forward. It is a testament to his skills as a songwriter and performer that the song has endured almost 50 years since its release. With its haunting melody and powerful lyrics, "Bluebird" remains an enduring classic of 1970s rock.

I think the meaning is very different to that posted above.
The author is Jesus.
The strange time is the period of his crucifixion and death.
She was my women (Mary Magdalene) and he was my friend (his erstwhile friend Judas).
But he was wrong about both.
He's talking to God who is putting him through this strange time and despite that he still loves God.
"Roll away the stone". He's in the cave. He's begging God to open the cave, protecting him and resurrect him for the good of those who'll be around in 2000 years ie us.
He thought God would have filled him in as to when the end of times would occur but he hasn't ("I guess you thought I knew")
He then accuses God of just trying to avoid him (Jesus) but still asks for protect and resurrection.

she

The lyric is "She was my woman and HE was my friend". That is, he's talking about two different people.
