Hummingbird
Leon Russell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh, sometimes I get impatient
But she cools me without words
And she comes so sweet and softly
My hummingbird, have you heard

That I thought my life had ended
And I find that it's just begun
'Cause she gets me where I live
I'll give her all I have to give
I'm talking about that hummingbird

She's little and I love her too much for words to say
When I see her in the morning sleeping
Yeah, she's little and she loves me too, my lucky day
Hummingbird don't fly away
Whoa yeah

When I'm feeling wild and lonesome
She knows the words to say
She gives me understanding
In her special way and I have to say

In my life I'll love no other
She's more than I deserve
And she gets me where I live
Give her everything I have to give
I'm talking about that hummingbird

She's little and I love her too much for words to say
When I see her in the morning sleeping
Yeah, she's little and she loves me too, my lucky day
Hummingbird don't fly away

(Don't fly away, ooh)
(Don't fly away, ooh)
(Don't fly away, ooh)

(Don't fly away, ooh)
(Don't fly away)

Overall Meaning

Leon Russell's song Hummingbird is a tribute to a special person in his life who brings him comfort and understanding in a way that no one else can. The "hummingbird" in the song is a metaphor for this person who he describes as small and sweet. He sings about how sometimes he gets impatient and restless, but the hummingbird cools him without words. This suggests that the person is not a chatterbox, but has an understated way of calming him down. In the second verse, he talks about how he thought his life had ended, but the hummingbird has shown him that it's just the beginning. He loves her without reservation and knows that she's more than he deserves.

The third verse is where Leon Russell admits that he's wild and lonesome at times, but the hummingbird knows the words to say to help him feel understood. He emphasizes that he'll love no other in his life because she gets him where he lives. He's willing to give her everything he has because she's so special to him. The chorus repeats that the hummingbird is little, but he loves her too much for words to say. He doesn't want her to fly away because she's his lucky day.

Leon Russell's Hummingbird is a beautiful tribute to a person who brings comfort and understanding to his life. It's a reminder that even in our darkest moments, there are people who have the ability to calm us down and show us a new perspective on life. The hummingbird metaphor is perfect because it's a symbol of beauty, grace, and agility. Overall, Hummingbird is a love song that celebrates the power of connection and understanding between two people.

on Roll Away The Stone

I think the meaning is very different to that posted above.
The author is Jesus.
The strange time is the period of his crucifixion and death.
She was my women (Mary Magdalene) and he was my friend (his erstwhile friend Judas).
But he was wrong about both.
He's talking to God who is putting him through this strange time and despite that he still loves God.
"Roll away the stone". He's in the cave. He's begging God to open the cave, protecting him and resurrect him for the good of those who'll be around in 2000 years ie us.
He thought God would have filled him in as to when the end of times would occur but he hasn't ("I guess you thought I knew")
He then accuses God of just trying to avoid him (Jesus) but still asks for protect and resurrection.

she

The lyric is "She was my woman and HE was my friend". That is, he's talking about two different people.
