My Funny Valentine
Leon Russell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

My funny valentine, sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable, un-photographable
Yet, you're my favorite work of art

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But, don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's Day

Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little weak?
When you open it to speak
Are you smart?

But, don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me

Stay little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's Day

Overall Meaning

The song "My Funny Valentine" by Leon Russell is a classic love ballad that has become a standard for jazz musicians over the years. The song is addressed to a lover who is not conventionally attractive, but is still beloved to the singer. The singer admires their partner's humor and their ability to make them smile, even though their looks may not be considered traditionally attractive or photogenic.

The singer asks a series of questions about their partner's appearance and intelligence, but ultimately reassures them that they don't need to change a thing in order to be loved. The chorus encourages the partner to stay "little valentine" each and every day, as every day can be a celebration of love.

This is exquisite.
For me , the older Leon became, the more raspy and distinctively,”Leon,” his voice became.
One of a kind.

That last tour he did, with the band of teenagers, was amazing. I saw him at a small bar in columbus. Just phenomenal.
