Smoke gets in your eyes
Leon Russell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They asked me how I knew my true love was true
I of course replied "something here inside cannot be denied"
They said "someday you'll find all who love are blind"
When your heart's on fire, you must realize smoke gets in your eyes
So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed to think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away, I am without my love

Now laughing friends deride tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say "when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes"

(Smoke gets in your eyes, smoke gets in your eyes)

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics to Leon Russell's "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" tell the story of a discussion about true love. Someone has asked the singer how they know their love is real, and the singer responds by saying that they can feel it inside. However, the people around the singer warn that eventually, the love will fade and they will realize that they were blinded by love. But when the heart is on fire, it's hard to see clearly, and smoke gets in your eyes. The song's title itself is a metaphor for the way that love can cloud our judgment, as if smoke has been poured into our eyes.

The song continues with the singer reflecting back on their situation. They laughed at their friends for doubting the strength of their love, but now their love has left them and they are alone. The laughing friends are now mocking the singer's tears that they cannot hide. In response, the singer smiles and says that when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes.

Overall, "Smoke Gets In Your Eyes" is a poignant commentary on the nature of love and how it can both elevate and blind us. The song captures the way that love can feel all-consuming in the moment, but that it can also evaporate before our eyes leaving us feeling lost and alone.

I think the meaning is very different to that posted above.
The author is Jesus.
The strange time is the period of his crucifixion and death.
She was my women (Mary Magdalene) and he was my friend (his erstwhile friend Judas).
But he was wrong about both.
He's talking to God who is putting him through this strange time and despite that he still loves God.
"Roll away the stone". He's in the cave. He's begging God to open the cave, protecting him and resurrect him for the good of those who'll be around in 2000 years ie us.
He thought God would have filled him in as to when the end of times would occur but he hasn't ("I guess you thought I knew")
He then accuses God of just trying to avoid him (Jesus) but still asks for protect and resurrection.

she

The lyric is "She was my woman and HE was my friend". That is, he's talking about two different people.
