The First Noel
Leon Russell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The first Noel the angels did sing
Was to certain poor shepherds
In fields as they lay
In fields fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the king of Israel

And to the Earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the king of Israel

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the king of Israel

Overall Meaning

The first verse of Leon Russell's version of The First Noel sets the scene for the tale that follows. It paints the picture of the humble birth of Christ, which is marked by the appearance of angels to a group of shepherds. The simplicity of the shepherds and the fields in which they tend to their sheep emphasizes the humbleness of Christ's birth. The lyrics then mention the deep winter night, which could symbolize the darkness or adversity that often comes before a glimmer of hope appears.

The chorus repeats the refrain "Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel" three times. The word "Noel" is derived from the French word "Noël" meaning Christmas. The repetition of this word reinforces the joyousness of the occasion and emphasizes Christ's royal lineage, as he is referred to as the "King of Israel." The second verse then reinforces this by stating how the birth gave great light to the Earth, which continued both day and night. This imagery of light and joy signifies the hope brought forth by Christ's birth.

I think the meaning is very different to that posted above.
The author is Jesus.
The strange time is the period of his crucifixion and death.
She was my women (Mary Magdalene) and he was my friend (his erstwhile friend Judas).
But he was wrong about both.
He's talking to God who is putting him through this strange time and despite that he still loves God.
"Roll away the stone". He's in the cave. He's begging God to open the cave, protecting him and resurrect him for the good of those who'll be around in 2000 years ie us.
He thought God would have filled him in as to when the end of times would occur but he hasn't ("I guess you thought I knew")
He then accuses God of just trying to avoid him (Jesus) but still asks for protect and resurrection.

she

The lyric is "She was my woman and HE was my friend". That is, he's talking about two different people.
