You Are My Sunshine
Leon Russell Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine, you make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know dear, how much I love you, please don't take my sunshine away
The other night dear as I laid sleeping I dreamed I held you by my side
When I awoke dear I was mistaken and I hung my head and cry
You are my sunshine
You told me once dear you really loved me and no one else could come between

But now you've left me and you love another and you have shattered all my dreams
You are my sunshine
I'll always love you and make you happy if you will only say the same
But if you leave me to love another you'll regret it all some day

You are my sunshine
Please don't take my sunshine away

Overall Meaning

Leon Russell's version of the classic song, You Are My Sunshine, tells a story of love and heartbreak. The lyrics begin with a declaration of love and appreciation for the person who brings light and happiness to the singer's life. It's clear that this person is important and cherished deeply. However, in the second verse, the singer reveals that he had a dream that his loved one was by his side, only to wake up and realize it wasn't true. This sets the tone for the rest of the song where the singer is desperately holding on to this person who has left him for someone else. He tells the person that he will always love them and make them happy, but if they leave him, they will regret it someday.

The lyrics to this song are relatable and have been covered by many artists over the years. The emotions of love, hope, heartache, and regret that it conveys are universal and evergreen. The song serves as a reminder that love is not always easy and that it's worth fighting for. The melody is simple, yet powerful, and Russell's soulful voice adds to the emotional depth of the lyrics.

I think the meaning is very different to that posted above.
The author is Jesus.
The strange time is the period of his crucifixion and death.
She was my women (Mary Magdalene) and he was my friend (his erstwhile friend Judas).
But he was wrong about both.
He's talking to God who is putting him through this strange time and despite that he still loves God.
"Roll away the stone". He's in the cave. He's begging God to open the cave, protecting him and resurrect him for the good of those who'll be around in 2000 years ie us.
He thought God would have filled him in as to when the end of times would occur but he hasn't ("I guess you thought I knew")
He then accuses God of just trying to avoid him (Jesus) but still asks for protect and resurrection.

she

The lyric is "She was my woman and HE was my friend". That is, he's talking about two different people.
