First We Take Manhattan
Leonard Cohen/Anjani Thomas Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For trying to change the system from within
I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'm guided by a signal in the heavens
I'm guided by this birthmark on my skin
I'm guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'd really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those

Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I don't like your fashion business mister
And I don't like these drugs that keep you thin
I don't like what happened to my sister
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I'd really like to live beside you, baby

And I thank you for those items that you sent me
The monkey and the plywood violin
I practiced every night, now I'm ready
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

I am guided

Ah remember me, I used to live for music
Remember me, I brought your groceries in

Well it's Father's Day and everybody's wounded
First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Leonard Cohen's "First We Take Manhattan, Then We Take Berlin" are full of political and societal commentary. The song opens with the singer being sentenced to "twenty years of boredom" for trying to change the system from within. This line suggests the frustration and sense of hopelessness that one can feel when trying to initiate change through traditional methods. The singer then claims to be guided by a signal in the heavens and a birthmark on their skin, as well as the beauty of their weapons. This line is a powerful commentary on the power of ideology and how it can drive people to do incredible things, both good and bad.

The song takes a turn when the singer addresses their lover, telling them that they would like to live beside them but are committed to their mission to take Manhattan and then Berlin. The singer credits the lover with loving them as a loser but being worried that they just might win. This line suggests that the singer is not afraid to take risks and potentially fail, knowing that their lover will be there to support them nonetheless. The song ends with the singer reminiscing about simpler times, when they used to live for music and bring groceries in.

At 1:45 , he steps away to watch the backup singers and the expression on his face is wonderful. You can tell he’s a fan of them as as much as we’re a fan of him. Love it. Miss you dearly Leonard.

killer arrangement. great vocals.
for those who say cohen is not a great singer, just observe that you can understand the words! he sings with DICTION. so many singers mumble the lyric. but he's a poet and he wants people to know what he's saying and singing.

@Matt G "I was born this way, I had no choice, I was born with the gift of a golden voice."

to me, a great singer is someone that I believe the words they're singing. So, for example, Celine Dion in English is a bad singer, as she does not convey emotion beyond cliche.

He is very comparable with Bob Dyan....neither great vocalists but distinctive and unique voices of their own, both superb songwriters!! (one might even throw in Neil Young as well)

I once saw a quote in which he acknowledged he didn't have a conventionally "good" singing voice, "but I like to think I have a certain way of delivering a song" - (from memory, might not be quite correct). Also, don't forget "I was born like this, I had no choice / I was born with the gift of a golden voice ", from Tower of Song. Wicked sense of humour.

Goosebumps at the ready! One of the most unique tunes ever. I know it's been done before by other artists but Leonards (who wrote it) version is a masterpiece. The bass, trumpet, drums & the synthesiser are pure class. The backing singers, incredible vocals & harmonies & Leonard of course is pure genius on this anthem. Was in my early 20s when I first heard this on my mates expensive stack system, the bass was phenomenal. The vibration felt like it was going to explode inside me. This anthem really touches my soul. Sassy too. Good vibes.

This was the first song I ever heard by Leonard Cohen and it blew my 16-year-old brain flat against the wall behind me. I've been a fan ever since.
