Theme
Leonard J. Paul Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How can I just let you walk away,
Just let you leave without a trace?
When I stand here taking every breath with you, ooh ooh
You're the only one who really knew me at all

How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave?
'Cause we've shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Take a look at me now

Well there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against the odds
And that's what I've got to face, oh

I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face

Take a look at me now
Well there's just an empty space
But to wait for you is all I can do
And that's what I've got to face

Take a good look at me now
'Cause I'll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against the odds

And it's what I've got to face
Take a look at me now

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Leonard J. Paul's song 'Theme' are a poignant representation of heartbreak, loss, and the courage it takes to confront the aftermath of a failed relationship. The singer is grappling with the sudden departure of someone he once held dear, begging them to reconsider their decision and come back to him. However, as he stands there, watching them leave, he realizes that they are the only one who truly knew him, and he is left with nothing but the memories of their time together. The music itself is slow, emotive, and raw, reflecting the depth of his feelings and the uncertainty of his future.

The song takes on a universal aspect as it taps into the vulnerability of human existence. The song's overall mood is melancholic and mournful, and the lyrics echo the bittersweet pain of loss. The persona is both regretful and hopeful, believing that the chances of his lover returning are slim, yet still holding on to the faint hope of reconciling. The line, "you're the only one who really knew me at all," highlights the idea that the person he is talking to understands him in ways that nobody else could. The singer is worried that he may never find someone who understands or loves him the way this person did emotionally.

Overall, the song speaks to the potent power of love, heartbreak and the often-difficult journey that follows. The song's purpose is about how memories can be both painful and comforting, simultaneously. It attempts to show the universal emotions that come with loss and how even though people may move on in life, the memory of a lost love will stick with them forever as they strive to find closure.

+101jir | Unfortunately, I lost the text somewhere in a file, or entirely after not saving the file and the computer restarting or crashing.

So, the piece is minimalist, and off the top of my head, it reminds me of the following composers and artists, who did stuff evoking similar memories:

• Arvo Pärt – "Fratres"
• Jerry Goldsmith – "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" original soundtrack
• Joel Goldsmith – Stargate Universe
• Mike Foyle – "Love Theme Dusk", "Shipwrecked"
• Linkin Park – "Session" from "The Matrix Reloaded" (R.I.P., Chester)
• Olive – "You're Not Alone"

In the lost original, I also brought out the links to those tracks.

I came to this video/song because of the 'Journey into Black Hole' animation. What a masterpiece - it transcends themes, genres so effortlessly, it just penetrates as if there is no wall for it. ....An irony to note - corporations, infinite growth, money sucking machinery and black holes do may have something in common, some things.....

What I like about the theme is it can sound predatory, or it can sound tragic, like some of the opinions expressed on the first part of the vid (tragic because some think corporations are unfairly blamed). To me, the music sounds tragic more in the sense of something that could have been good, but was corrupted and tarnished. I wonder if assosiating this song with corporations, then interpreting how this song makes you feel indicates your underlying feelings about corporations. IDK, would be cool if it did.
