On the Street Where You Live
Leonard Weir Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I have often walked down this street before
But the pavement always stayed beneath my feet before
All at once am I several stories high
Knowing I'm on the street where you live

Are there lilac trees in the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour out of every door?
No, it's just on the street where you live

And oh, the towering feeling just to know somehow you are near
The overpowering feeling that any second you may suddenly appear

People stop and stare, they don't bother me
For there's nowhere else on earth that I would rather be

Let the time go by, I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live

Overall Meaning

Leonard Weir's On The Street Where You Live is a love song that delves into the power of love and the effect it has on both the individual and the environment around them. The first verse talks about how the singer has walked down the street before, but never paid attention until now when he is on that same street, and he starts feeling all sorts of emotions rushing through him. The second verse is a rhetorical question, where the singer wonders if the rest of the town experiences the same magic that they do when they are on this street, suggesting that perhaps this is the only place where love is truly felt. The chorus then goes on to describe just how strong the singer feels when he realizes he is in close proximity to his beloved. Even though people notice him standing still and looking up, he doesn't care, as he is happy to be on the street where his love resides.

The lyrics of On The Street Where You Live evoke the idea that the street where one's loved one lives is the most significant place in the world. It's a place where dreams are fulfilled, and only the person you love is present and nothing else matters. This song beautifully captures the sentiment that when we are in love, the things around us become enchanting, and everything fits into place. It is powerful to see how the singer's surroundings become a reflection of how he feels, as if he is living in a magical world where only he and his beloved exist. The songbook of My Fair Lady inspired Leonard Weir's Song Credit which he reimagined adding his touch of danceable Jazz arranging the piece to make it a track that features work from different musicians.

As brilliant as all of the music and singing is in My Fair Lady. Leonard Weir's performance of On the Street Where You Live made me get up, go over to the console stereo, pick up the album cover and find out the name of the man singing this song. I have never forgotten his name since nor his crystal clear voice.
