Pyramid of the Sun
Les Baxter Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The golden age of the future comes
That which was dreamed of in the past
Where freedom reigns on minds of peace
Minds rich in wisdom to the last
We are the children of the sun
And this is our inheritance
No longer chaos and confusion
But love and laughter, song and dance

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of Les Baxter's song Pyramid of the Sun evoke a sense of hope and optimism - depicting a future that will be a golden age that was once only dreamt about in the past. The subsequent lines highlight the characteristics of this utopian future - where freedom reigns over peaceful and wise minds. The final lines aptly express the message of the song - that we are the inheritors of this bright future as the "children of the sun". The future is one that is no longer marked by chaos and confusion but replaces it with the joy of love, laughter, song and dance.

The imagery of the song seems to draw inspiration from Mesoamerican cultures, primarily from the city of Teotihuacan in modern-day Mexico. The city was known for its impressive architecture, including the Pyramid of the Sun, which is the titular monument of the song. The lyrics of the song represent the prevalent belief in Teotihuacan that the sun was the source of life and that the inhabitants of the city were the chosen ones to receive its blessings. The song attempts to capture the spirit of this optimism, unity and reverence that permeated through the ancient Mesoamerican societies.

Can someone tell me if this song would be considered either Exotica, Lounge, Ultra Lounge or Space Age-Pop. I basically know what they all are but I'm having a little trouble distinguishing the differences.

+Cameron Galloway What does it matter? A lot of good music is made outside the box of genres. Genres are only there to approach a certain style, but it's nothing more then that. I think a lot of people think too much in those fixed structures. We tend to label it automatically, and when we do not get it immediatly, we wonder. That's the wonderful thing about interesting and good music in my opinion. Being dragged outside those structures. But questioning in which genre a song is made, is irrelevant. It is the song that defines beauty, not the genre.
