This is one in-spiring session of sounds a'musing...

Callers to KBOO's THE OUTSIDE WORLD in the wee hours over terrestrial FM late night radio read aloud the stirring account of that unique and socio-politically historical musically out-spired session.
The repurposing of a Eugene McDaniels song that was first cut by McCann around the time of the Detroit Race Riots and then right up through Watergate and the VP Agnew and President Nixon resignations in a globally SHAMED IMPERIAL NATION. Anticipating by 5 years the coup in red sand dirt poor Mali through Dee Dee Bridgewater's Bamako Odyssey 2007 recording with "Compared to What" capped by a politically prophetic hip-hopster named Lassy King Massassy free-styling in the indigenous Songhay language a bit of Sahel-ian evolutionary rap uprising addressed to Mali's corrupt Bamako Ruling Elite that nevertheless 5 years later got routed by a nomadic Saharan smuggling and Islamist privateer force that brought the western powers Daddy Warbucks mercenary clients and French Foreign Legion back into the North African desert...

I used to see these guys in LA and Phoenix -- Herbie Lewis was amazing -- especially in person. And, I loved the McCann style.

Soundstage

Had the great experience of hearing this group in the 60's and sharing a long lasting friendship. Les McCann is a wonderful artist also and currently plays often with a Javon Jackson

+Soundstage - Like you, I had the pleasure of seeing Les and his trio (with Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Ron Jefferson on drums) in person in the early 60's in L.A. at The Bit (where the great album/CD The Shout was recorded) - Les has always been on my list of top 5 piano players (along with Bill Evans, Denny Zeitlin, Red Garland and a tie for 5th with Ahmad Jamal and Gene Harris) - "KEEP ENJOYING THE SOUNDS OF JAZZ"
