On My Own
Les Misérables Motion Picture Cast Feat. Samantha Barks Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On my own
Pretending he's beside me
All alone
I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me

In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone
The river's just a river
Without him
The world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him
But every day I'm learning
All my life
I've only been pretending
Without me
His world will go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known

I love him
I love him

I love him
But only on my own

Overall Meaning

The song On My Own from Les Miserables (2010 Cast) is sung by the character Eponine as she wanders the streets alone, pining for the love of Marius, who loves another woman, Cosette. Eponine's unrequited love for Marius consumes her, and despite his indifference towards her, she continues to hold onto the hope that they could be together. Through her lyrics, Eponine expresses the pain and longing she feels for Marius, imagining him by her side and feeling his arms around her, even when he is not actually there. The imagery of the rain, pavement, and trees emphasizes her solitude and emphasizes her desire to escape her own reality and be with Marius.

Despite her sadness and unrequited love, Eponine's determination and passion shine through. She acknowledges that her love for Marius is one-sided, and that he will never feel the same way about her. However, she still hopes for a miracle and believes that one day they may be together. She is aware that she is only talking to herself, but she holds onto the idea that there is a way for them to be together. Ultimately, Eponine becomes resigned to her fate, knowing that even though she loves Marius, she will always only love him on her own.
