On My Own
Les Miserables - 25th Anniversary Concert Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

And now I'm all alone again nowhere to go no one to turn to
Don't want your money sir, I came out here 'cause I was told to
And now the night is near
Now I can make believe he's here

Sometimes I walk alone at night when everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I'm happy with the company I'm keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head

On my own, pretending he's beside me
All alone, I walk with him 'til morning
Without him, I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me

In the rain, the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us

I love him, but when the night is over
He is gone, the river's just a river
Without him, the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers

I love him, but every day I'm learning
All my life, I've only been pretending
Without me, his world would go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known

I love him
I love him

I love him
But only on my own

Overall Meaning

The song "On My Own" from Les Miserables is a heartbreaking and poignant ballad of unrequited love. The singer, Eponine, is in love with a man who does not love her back. This is a tragic song that makes us feel the pain of her unreciprocated love.

Eponine is alone and has nowhere to go, but she does not want the money of anyone. She has come to this point because she was told to, but she is now left alone. The lyrics describe how she thinks of the man she loves and how she pretends that he is there with her. She walks alone at night, and she imagines that he is walking beside her, even though she knows that it is just in her head.

The song expresses Eponine's deep love for this man, and how she cannot help but think of him all the time. The lyrics paint a picture of the despair she feels, as she knows that the man she loves will never love her back. The song is a beautiful and powerful representation of the emotions that are felt when love is unrequited.

And now I'm all alone again nowhere to go
No one to turn to
Without a home, without a friend
Without a face so say hello to
And now the night is near
Now I can make believe he's here

Sometimes I walk alone at night
When everybody else is sleeping
I think of him and then I'm happy
With the company I'm keeping
The city goes to bed
And I can live inside my head

On my own, pretending he's beside me
All alone, I walk with him 'til morning
Without him, I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me

In the rain, the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness, the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever
And forever

And I know it's only in my mind
That I'm talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say, there's a way for us

I love him, but when the night is over
He is gone, the river's just a river
Without him, the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere

I love him, but every day I'm learning
All my life, I've only been pretending
Without me, his world would go on turning
A world that's full of happiness
That I have never known

I love him...
I love him...
I love him...
But only on my own

I think this is 1,000,000x more powerful, magical and haunting than the film version - from orchestration to performance...

Always

Teti

Yeah I heard they told her to underperform so she wouldn’t outshine anyone in the film due to her experience.. and yet she still outshined them all 😂

tomgallowitz

@Teti except Aaron he was her equal, may not have done Les Mis but he was strong as well, the stage principles definitely outshined their Hollywood companions

Sharpe

@tomgallowitz Not to mention perfectly cast. If I remember right, Enjolras is described as blonde and angelic looking.

AdamLambboy

@Teti girl held back and still outperformed everyone.

i hate how i can't watch one vid of sam singing this without the lea stans comparing her to lea. they're both amazing and shouldn't be pitted against each other.

Dan

To be fair, Lea is already an icon by now. It’s a good thing for Sam to be compared to her tbh (if you think about it in a positive light). Like being compared to Judy Khun (as Cosette) or Philip Quast (as Javert), it’s like an accolade.

It’s not like Nick Jonas being compared to Michael Ball just to troll him (because tbh Nick is nowhere near Michael), unless of course if that’s how y’all view it when Sam and Lea are mentioned in the same sentence, then that’s a different story

jph

Honestly, I prefer her singing this and Lea singing I Dreamed a Dream. But I'm uncultured and have only seen a handful of videos. I do like Lea, of course, her singing A Whole New World with Peabo is amazing. But Samantha does this one right, for me.

lauro pinca

I not a fan of Lea but Lea has set a standard that the new versions have been trying to copy or pass it.
