My Prayer
Les Platters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When the twilight is gone and no songbirds are singing
When the twilight is gone you come into my heart
And here in my heart you will stay while I pray

My prayer is to linger with you
At the end of the day in a dream that's divine
My prayer is a rapture in blue
With the world far away and your lips close to mine

Tonight while our hearts are aglow
Oh tell me the words that I'm longing to know

My prayer and the answer you give

May they still be the same for as long as we live
That you'll always be there at the end of my prayer

Overall Meaning

The song "My Prayer" by The Platters is a beautiful love song that asks for a partner's presence and guarantees undying love. The song starts by setting the scene- at twilight when no songbirds are singing, the singer begs for the person they love to come into their heart, where they will stay while the singer prays. The lyrics suggest that the presence of the singer’s loved one makes them feel more at ease, and the absence of the songbirds and the arrival of the dark remind the singer of the emptiness they feel without their lover around.

The singer then goes on to describe their dream sequence, where they want to linger with their lover at the end of the day. The dream is described as divine, full of rapture in blue, with the world far away and their lover's lips close to theirs. The singer is clearly envisioning a blissful moment with their lover in their head, wanting to capture it forever. Finally, the singer asks their lover to tell them the words that they long to hear while their hearts are aglow. They then express a wish that their prayer and their partner’s answer to it should remain the same as long as they live, and they want their lover to always be there at the end of their prayer.

In all, the song exhibits the yearning of a lover for their partner to always be with them to provide comfort and love, and assures them of unconditional love. The song's beautiful lyrics express a deep sense of love, longing and prayer and is one of the greatest love songs ever written.

High school in the mid 50's was a trip.My class back east was '58,
and THE PLATTERS were just terrific back then, hit after hit, the BEST slow
music to dance to ever. We were so cool, we never even knew how lucky we were,
or how it all would change forever shortly thereafter. That fabulous music, those beautiful girls, the unbelievable cars - what a time it was to be young & alive!
Hail hail rock 'n' roll!

This song gives me goosebumps.
I'm 75, and it still takes me back to when I was a pre-teen.
Tony Williams had the voice and looks of an angel.

My late Dad loved the Platters. He was dying when I was married the first time.. My second time he was gone... My Husband and I danced to this song for our first dance at our wedding reception.. To this day... (34 years later on August 1, 2021) I still tear up... Rest in Peace, Daddy, I found my Mr. Right..... Love, your mad cap first born...
