Smoke gets in your eyes
Les Platters Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
I of course replied
Something here inside cannot be denied
They said "someday you'll find all who love are blind"
When your heart's on fire,
You must realize, smoke gets in your eyes
So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away,
I am without my love (without my love)

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I cannot hide
So I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes

(Smoke gets in your eyes, smoke gets in your eyes)

Smoke gets in your eyes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" by The Platters is a heart-wrenching ballad about love, loss, and the pain that comes with it. The song talks about how there is an inexplicable feeling inside a person when they know they have found true love, which cannot be denied. However, this feeling is something that only those who have experienced it can understand, and others may call it blindness.

The song goes on to say that when your heart is on fire with love, you must realize that smoke gets in your eyes. This could be interpreted as a metaphor for not seeing things clearly when you are consumed with love.

The Platters' lead singer goes on to say that he laughed at his friends when they doubted his love, but now that his love has flown away, he is left without it. The laughing friends now deride him, and he cannot hide his tears. He explains that when a lovely flame dies, smoke gets in your eyes.

Overall, the song is a poignant reminder of the pain that comes with losing someone you love. The lyrics are beautifully written and capture the emotional turmoil that one goes through after losing a loved one.

I just learned this song was originally from 1932 and the The Platters did a re-make of it.

@Woodcut60

From the 1933 musical "Roberta". Composer was Jerome Kern, lyricist Otto Harbach.

I’m 48. My father died a couple years ago at age 80. He used to put in a Platters tape and this song would come on. Gooood stuff!! This reminds me being a kid and spending time with my dad. 🙂
