They began performing in the early 1980's in alternative spaces such as the Pali-Kao, a squatted factory building in Belleville, Paris. Their first hit single was Marcia Baila off the Rita Mitsouko album, a song about the Argentinian choreographer and dancer Marcia Moretto who had died of cancer in 1981 and with whom they had performed on several occasions. This album was creative and eccentric (produced by Conny Plank, sound engineer and producer of Neu! and Kraftwerk) combining elements of punk, rock, cold electro pop and jazz, and coupled with their colorful, wild, over-the-top image caught the interest of some important anglophone listeners.
American record producer and musician Tony Visconti produced the following two albums, The No Comprendo and Marc et Robert, while polishing and perfecting their sound. The American band Sparks collaborated with them on the latter record and Russell Mael sings lead vocals with Ringer on three tracks, Singing in the Shower, Live in Las Vegas and Hip Kit. These two albums feature both French and English lyrics. The most successful singles were C'est comme ça and Andy.
Jean-Baptiste Mondino directed most of their music videos in the 1980's and Jean-Luc Godard filmed a short documentary Soigne ta droite about the group during the recording of The No Comprendo in 1986.
On Wednesday November 28th 2007, Fred Chichin died from cancer while the band had just cancelled their previous concert dates in Paris. He was only diagnosed with the disease two months before.
Stupid Anyway

But I'm stupid anyway
I got every man
And I'm stupid anyway
I tried them nite and day
Even I got money
I say
But I'm stupid anyway
I tried, I tried, them nite and day
And I'm stupid anyway
Perhaps I'm too lazy
Perhaps I'm too lazy
I tried every man
But I'm stupid anyway
I got every man
And I'm stupid anyway
I tried them nite and day
Even I got money
I say
I tried every man
But I'm stupid anyway
I tried, I tried, them nite and day
And I'm stupid anyway
Maybe I'm too lazy
The laziest girl in town...
The song "Stupid Anyway" by Les Rita Mitsouko explores the singer's struggles with relationships and her perception of herself. The recurring line "I tried every man but I'm stupid anyway" highlights her past attempts to find love which resulted in feelings of inadequacy and confusion. The lyrics suggest that despite her efforts, she cannot escape her own perceived stupidity or lack of worth. The line "perhaps I'm too lazy" further emphasizes her feelings of helplessness and resignation, as she sees her lack of effort or motivation as a contributing factor to her struggles.
The song's repetition of the phrase "I'm stupid anyway" creates a sense of hopelessness and self-deprecation. However, the chorus is also accompanied by upbeat and catchy music, suggesting a possible disconnect between the singer's words and the actual emotion being conveyed. The line "the laziest girl in town" further adds to this disconnect, as it is delivered with a sense of humor that contrasts with the serious meaning behind the lyrics.
Overall, "Stupid Anyway" highlights the complex emotions involved in relationships and one's perceived self-worth. The conflicting feelings of hopelessness and humor create a memorable and thought-provoking piece of music.

Look at Les Rita. Look at Madonna. Look at Lady Gaga. Picasso said "Good artists borrow. Great artists steal." What a great pairing of talent, work, art, music, language, beauty and a self-assuredness that is contagious. what un chanteuse francais.
