Over the Rainbow
Lesley Garrett Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Somewhere over the rainbow, way up high
There's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby.
Somewhere over the rainbow, skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to dream,
Really do come true.

Someday I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me.
Where troubles melt like lemon drops,
High above the chimney tops,
That's where you'll find me.

Somewhere over the rainbow, blue birds fly
Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?

If happy little bluebirds fly beyond the rainbow
Why, oh why can't I?

Overall Meaning

Lesley Garrett's rendition of "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" is a heartwarming and captivating tribute to the classic song made famous by Judy Garland in the classic film The Wizard of Oz. The lyrics hold a certain nostalgia that speaks to a longing for a better place, a place of hope and possibilities, possibly a faraway land beyond the rainbow. The song begins with a description of this distant place, "somewhere over the rainbow, way up high, there's a land that I've heard of once in a lullaby", signifying that the place is otherworldly and unknown to us. The skies are described as being blue, a striking contrast to the dull and monotonous grey that's seen in the movie just before Dorothy is transported to Oz. This land is a place that inspires hope and makes even the most impossible dreams possible.

The second verse speaks of the desire to leave the human world behind and step into this fabled land, beyond the clouds, where troubles cease to hold sway, and lemon drops replace them. The idea of a utopia where nothing can go wrong speaks to the longing for that perfect place, a place that most of us have dreamt of but never truly experienced. The chorus is a refrain of the same words from the beginning of the song, the only difference being that "blue birds fly over the rainbow" and "why can't I?" asks the question that all of us have wondered at some point in our lives. Why can't we experience that perfect place beyond the horizon, a place where all our dreams come true, where the birds fly freely but we're left behind?

stunning, she conveys a innocence to her performances that brings you to tears.

She is the only opera singer who can  chat to camera like a professional presenter.

I had never heard the introduction before this.

I love LG, but I don't think this type of song works when sung by an opera singer - any such, not just LG. in the same way I wouldn't expect Miss Garland to tackle the great arias. It's like playing golf with a sledgehammer, or using a Ferrari or 18-wheeler to go down to the corner shop.
