Lesley Roy Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm gonna let go of the armor
Let up the power that I've been hiding
Not afraid of the monsters, of the nightmares
That I've been fighting

Easy to run, harder to stay
Finding colors in the grey
You thought I was done
But I've gotta go on
I fell twice, I'm twice as strong

I've been searching all the wrong places
I've been trying too many faces
Only one way to go
This is the way back home
I've been searching all the wrong places
I've been trying too many faces
Only one way to go
This is the way back home

I had to take all of the long ways
All of the wrong ways
As I couldn't see
All the signs, all the mistakes
Pointing one way to get back to me

Easy to run, harder to stay
Finding colors in the grey
You thought I was done
But I've gotta go on
I fell twice, I'm twice as strong

I've been searching all the wrong places
I've been trying too many faces
Only one way to go
This is the way back home
I've been searching all the wrong places
I've been trying too many faces
Only one way to go
This is the way back home

My soul is a map, my heart is a compass
I am the road
There's only one way to go
This is the way back home
My soul is a map, my heart is a compass
I am the road
There's only one way to go
This is the way back home

I've been searching all the wrong places
I've been trying too many faces
Only one way to go
This is the way back home
I've been searching all the wrong places
I've been trying too many faces

Only one way to go
This is the way back home

Overall Meaning

In Lesley Roy's "Maps," the singer is declaring her independence from the armor and power that she had been using to protect herself from the monsters and nightmares that she had been fighting. She is ready to let go and face her fears head on. She sings that it's easy to run but harder to stay and find colors in the grey. Despite having fallen twice, she's now twice as strong.

The second verse starts with Roy admitting that she had been searching all the wrong places and trying too many faces. She then realizes that there's only one way to go, and that's the way back home. She confesses that she had taken all the long and wrong ways because she couldn't see all the signs and mistakes that were pointing one way back to her.

In the chorus, Roy declares that her soul is a map and her heart is a compass. She is the road, and there's only one way to go, which is the way back home. She repeats that she has been searching all the wrong places and trying too many faces, but there's only one way back home.

Overall, the song seems to be about finding oneself by facing and conquering one's demons and fears head-on. It's about realizing that all the answers are already inside oneself and that one must only look within to find their way back home.
