Great to see so many other people agree that this is the best version of A Christmas Carol. First saw it in a movie theater in 1971 and immediately loved it. My favorite scenes are the added "chilly" hell scenes with Alec Guinness, and particularly the romance scenes of Christmas past. Heartbreaking. Gets me every time.

It is the best of all time. It is even better than the Alistar Sim version of A Christmas Carol from 1951. This film with the great music and the sensational Albert Finney tops them all in a big way !!!!!

It’s by far my favorite adaptation of “A Christmas Carol.” My grandparents introduced me to it when I was a kid, and we’d watch it every year; my Gramps could go into Alec Guinness’ “mankind should be our business” monologue a pro lol. Albert Finney is the only Scrooge in my book.

I wasn't born until 1977 but I've always considered this 'my' Scrooge, the version I liked most and always looked forward to every year on TV growing up. I've since gained a huge appreciation for The Muppet Christmas Carol too, but this'll always remain my favourite. These days, I always make sure it's the last movie I watch on Christmas Eve, to lead me past midnight into Christmas Day and it always puts me in a great mood. Just finished my yearly viewing now, in fact 🙂

A soundtrack album containing all the songs from the film was issued on Columbia Records in 1970. Due to legal complications, however, the soundtrack has never been re-released in the CD format. The current Paramount Blu-ray release of the film has removed the Overture (intact on all VHS and DVD releases).

I saw this with my family at Radio City Music Hall in December of 1970. The soundtrack became the soundtrack to every Christmas after. Each one of us owns a copy of the record and DVD. It endures to this day. It is the most beautiful Christmas masterpiece that only the great Leslie Bricusse could compose!

Thank you for posting! My Dad took my sister and I to see this. I was 5 or so, but this soundtrack takes me back to those wonderful days. To this day, the song “Happiness” is the quintessential love song!

It's a family tradition at this point to watch this movie on Christmas Day. Me personally I enjoy watching it while I decorate my tree. Past memories further embed it into my memory and brings me joy just hearing this overture

I love this movie! I was 12 years old when I saw it at the cinema in 1970. It was many years before I was able to see it again, first on VHS, then later on DVD, and more recently on Blu-ray. I still watch it every year, and sometimes well outside the Christmas season. Such a shame the soundtrack is not available on CD or digital download. For putting this on YouTube, to MarianneLily I say, “Thank you very much!”

Has been my favorite Christmas movie since my mom took me to see it when I was 5 or 6, way back in '71 or '72. Back then movies like this would be released just for a couple of weeks, every year. Thank you so very much.

This has always been my absolute favorite version of a Christmas Carol. Alec Guinness was the best portrayal of Jacob Marley. I wish this soundtrack was available on CD.

Best Christmas Movie!! We would watch this every year in an old movie theater until they stopped playing it (this was in the 80s) We then bought the VHS and then DVD and watch it every year. This year the family rented out a movie theater and all went to watch it together.

Oh how I wish I was a member of your family; I never had the pleasure of seeing it on the big screen. I watch Scrooge several times each Christmas season. Albert Finney's performance is sheer perfection; not to mention the entire supporting cast as well. The music by the great Leslie Bricusse is absolutely infectious. It is by far the best version of A Christmas Carol.

My dad said he was already crying at the movie theatre when the overture started at the beginning and couldn't imagine how the movie could get any better! The music makes me cry still. The end medley of "Thank you very Much" and "Father Christmas" is extraordinary.

I saw this in the 4th grade and went decades before seeing it on cable again. Always lived this movie and bought it on iTunes.

Christmas of 1979 in NYC we went on a class trip of first graders to a run down Art Deco movie theatre. I was captivated by the whimsical pageantry and singular old world European spectacle with ambience and atmosphere by the megaton.
Easily the most sentimental and authentic telling of the Dickens' tale.
I couldn't appreciate the mater class performances of the sterling actors but now as an adult this is a treasure form the glorious 70's

Why has this film fallen off the radar in recent years? This used to be essential Christmas viewing, but sometime after the mid-90s/early 00s it seemed to vanish. It's to Christmas Carol what Oliver! is to Oliver Twist, so not sure why it hasn't held up as well - nobody seems to perform it much on the theatre circuit much anymore either....

Many people love to bash this adaptation, but Scrooge (1970) may be even better than Scrooge (1951)

This adaptation can never be replaced. The depth of characters, the heartwarming story of the Cratchit family, encompassed by a full Orchestral ensemble of the most timeless songs ever written. Dickens would have been proud!
