Foolin' Myself
Lester Young Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I try to keep you out of my heart
But somehow I find
Trying to keep you out of my heart
I'm out of my mind
I tell myself "I'm through with you
And I'll having nothing more to do with you"
I stay away, but every day
I'm just foolin myself

Tell my friends that I don't care
I shrug my shoulders at the whole affair
But all know it isn't so
I'm just foolin myself

And every time I pass
And see my face in a looking glass
I tip my hat and say
"How do you do, you fool
You're trowing your life away"
I'm acting gay
I'm acting proud
And every time I see you in a crowd
I may pretend

But in the end
I'm just fooling myself

Overall Meaning

In Lester Young's song Foolin' Myself, the singer is attempting to convince himself that he can live without his love interest, but he is not able to fully convince himself of that. He tries to keep the person out of his heart and tells himself that he is through with them, and that he will move on. However, he admits that he is just fooling himself with these statements, as he cannot escape his feelings or the pull they have on him.

The singer tries to convince his friends that he is over this person as well, but they all know that it isn't true. The title of the song is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing that the singer is aware that he is not being truthful with himself or others. In the end, he realizes that he is throwing his life away, but he is still struggling to find a way to move on from this person.
