Jeepers Creepers
Lester Young Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I don't care what the weatherman says
When the weatherman says it's raining
You'll never hear me complaining
I'm certain the sun will shine

I don't care how the weather vane points
When the weather vane points to gloomy
It's gotta be sunny to me
When your eyes look into mine

Jeepers creepers, where'd ya get those peepers?
Jeepers creepers, where'd ya get those eyes?
Gosh all, git up, how'd they get so lit up?
Gosh all, git up, how'd they get that size?

Golly gee, when you turn those heaters on
Woe is me, got to put my cheaters on

Jeepers creepers, where'd ya get those peepers?

Oh, those weepers, how they hypnotize!
Where'd ya get those eyes?

Overall Meaning

The first two stanzas of Jeepers Creepers are about the singer’s optimistic outlook on life. He claims not to care what the weatherman says because he is confident that the sun will eventually come out. He does not let the weather, or any external circumstance, dampen his spirits. Furthermore, he states that he is certain the sun will come out when his lover looks into his eyes. The reference to the weather vane highlights how the singer is not swayed by temporary and changeable things. He has a steadfast hope and belief that life will always bloom again despite any temporary darkness that may come.

The chorus of the song, “Jeepers creepers, where'd ya get those peepers? Jeepers creepers, where'd ya get those eyes? Gosh all, git up, how'd they get so lit up? Gosh all, git up, how'd they get that size?” is a playful ode to the singer’s love interest. The expression “Jeepers Creepers” was a slang term in the 1930s to express astonishment or wonder, similar to “Wow” or “Golly Gee”. The singer is enamored with his partner’s eyes and marvels at how they “light up” when they see him. The reference to “cheaters” in the final line is a play on words, referring both to glasses and the fact that the singer needs to put them on to see properly.
