Stairway to Heaven
Letz Zep Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a lady who's sure
All that glitters is gold
And she's buying a stairway to heaven
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed
With a word she can get what she came for
Oh oh oh oh and she's buying a stairway to heaven
There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'Cause you know sometimes words have two meanings
In a tree by the brook
There's a songbird who sings
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiving
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it makes me wonder
There's a feeling I get
When I look to the west
And my spirit is crying for leaving
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees
And the voices of those who standing looking
Ooh, it makes me wonder
Ooh, it really makes me wonder
And it's whispered that soon, If we all call the tune
Then the piper will lead us to reason
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now
It's just a spring clean for the May queen
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on
And it makes me wonder
Your head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know
The piper's calling you to join him
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show
How everything still turns to gold
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last
When all are one and one is all

To be a rock and not to roll
And she's buying the stairway to heaven

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin are highly symbolic and metaphorical, making it a subject of various interpretations. The first lines speak of a woman who believes that everything that glitters is gold and is buying herself a stairway to heaven. This figuratively means that she believes she can achieve everything in life if she has money or wealth. The song suggests that there are different paths one can take in life, and the woman in the song is choosing a path that involves materialism.

The lyrics further describe various scenes, including a sign on the wall that reminds the woman to be careful with her choices, a songbird by the brook that sings despite the confusion in one's thoughts, and smoke rings that represent illusions and confusion. The song suggests that there is a need for clarity and understanding amidst the chaos in life.

The song also speaks of a piper who can lead people to reason and a new day. The piper represents the power of music and the role it plays in bringing people together. The last lines of the song suggest that there is unity in diversity, and to be a rock and not roll means to be firm in one's convictions and values.

Overall, "Stairway to Heaven" is a complex song that talks about life philosophy and the human condition. It encourages people to seek meaning and purpose in life beyond materialism and superficial pleasures.

I am a die hard fan of LZ and have been since the Yardbirds era. They were, are, and will always be the BEST ever (and only them). While imitation is the highest form of flattery, this band doesn't come close to any part of Zep. If you want to play their songs, that's great, but please don't try to be them. I feel the same way about this band as I do all the other wannabe Jimmy Page/Led Zeppelin people. Do your own take on the Zeppelin songs, but quit trying to be them. It's impossible.
