A Pharoah's Dream
Level 42 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Last night I dreamt
that Ra was holding up a mirror
To my heart but all was darkness
So I prayed to all the Gods that I might see

And as they showed me my mortality
The hidden-one revealed himself
In voice alone and spoke
In condescending tones to me

"You are the Pharoah
You will journey through the after-life
And he-who-looks-behind
Will ask the questions you must answer to be free"

Osiris weigh my soul
And let me pass beyond

So I may row the boat of Ra
And be as one with all the Gods that set me free

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Level 42's song A Pharoah's Dream speak about a dream the pharaoh had. The dream consisted of Ra, the god associated with the sun in ancient Egyptian religion, holding up a mirror to the pharaoh's heart. The pharaoh prayed to the gods to allow him to see his heart, but it remained dark. The hidden one then revealed himself to the pharaoh and spoke to him, telling him that he was the pharaoh and that he would embark on a journey through the afterlife. He would meet he who looks behind, who would ask him questions about his life that he must answer to gain his freedom.

The lyrics are about the journey of the pharaoh's soul as he journeys through the afterlife. The song attempts to create a sense of mysticism and grandeur that often associate with ancient Egyptian religion. The song also touches on themes of death, mortality as well as the concept of the afterlife. It highlights the importance of seeking answers to unknown aspects of one's life, facing them and being honest with oneself to gain spiritual freedom.
