Children Say
Level 42 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I keep to myself
what I might share with others
but they don't seem to understand
I open my mouth
to rediscover
that I don't have the words at my command
holding out
for a world so much better
but I'm a stranger in a stranger's land
all my friends have sold out
couldn't handle the pressure
counting their blessings trying to salvage what they can

Children say - children say
we open our minds as one
but one more day - slips away
why don't the dreams of the young never come to be

When I overhear
my parents conversations
well I'm struck by the things they say
it seems they traded the years
for mere complications
who ever thought it could end this way
they close the door
but they can't lock it
'cause something of their childhood remains
and they've felt it before
when the man in their pocket
counted the cost of their material gains

Children say - come what may
be strong for the friends you've known
but one fine day - (not) far away
will we remember the love we used to own
Children say - children say
we open our minds as one
as one more day slips away
why don't the dreams of the young never come to be

Well you knew what I was saying
but did you know what it meant
when you saw that look in my eye
did you know it was heaven sent
was it all a waking dream
all that time we must have spetn
well I guess it must have been
somehow that feeling came and went

Children say - come what may
be strong for the friends you've known
but one fine day - (not) far away
will we remember the love we used to own
Children say - children say
we open our minds as one
as one more day - slips away
why don't the dreams of the young never come to be
Children say - children say
we thought it would never go

as one more day - slips away
who ever thought we could be so lonely

Overall Meaning

The Level 42 song "Children Say" contemplates the disconnection between generations through the eyes of an observer who struggles to find words to communicate with others. The song's insightful lyrics address universal themes of human loneliness, the loss of innocence, and unrealized dreams. The singer keeps to himself and feels like a stranger in a strange land. He longs for a world so much better than the one he finds himself in but feels that his friends have sold out and are trying to salvage what they can. The children, on the other hand, open their minds and unite in their dreams but one more day slips away, and their hopes remain unrealized.

The song's second verse examines the singer's parents' generation and how they have become mired in mere complications. They have traded their years for material gains, and while they may have the door to their childhood still unlocked, they cannot return to the simplicity of that time. The singer wonders whether we will ever remember the love we used to own when we were young, and why the dreams of the young never come to be. The song concludes with a melancholic reflection that those who listened to the "children say" may now be left with loneliness.

I'm a black man from America, and also a musician. I got first turned on to level 42 in the early 80's. But when I saw they're video for the first time, I didn't know that they were from England!! To me, it doesn't matter what nationality you are. If the music sounds good and you're grooving, f***k color and ethnicity. We all jamming! One of my favorite groups . Music is music. Mozart wrote and performed some of the most beautiful arrangements over 300 years ago that are still enjoyed to this day.

This comment deserves a reply in my book. Completely agree with all of your comments. And as a musician you need to go check out their back catalogue. There is is some very funky stuff to be enjoyed. I have seen them 3 or 4 times and I know they deserved to be bigger in the states than they were/are. Anyway Merry christmas to you and your family.
