Follow Me
Level 42 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It`s time now to move a bit
Forget about the stone faced angels
Just move along keep moving on
Silver to gold on the streets

There`s no pavements of gold, in the heat
There`s no more golden years - there your feet
Follow me to end of the earth before it all breaks down

They try to run from the cold
No retreat there`s nowhere left to go

It`s time now to move a bit forget about the stone age ages
Just move along keep moving on
Silver to gold and stone

The city`s crushing you stand alone but that`s no way to be
Follow me to the end of the earth
Follow me before it all breaks down
Follow me you`ll find if you go there
Your waiting there to be found

Follow me you turn around
We believe the same old story
Where heroes wear the crown

We don`t see the fame and glory
And watch the world go down

Overall Meaning

Level 42's "Follow Me" is a song about the importance of moving forward in life and the dangers of standing still. The opening lines suggest that it's time to leave behind the stone-faced angels, a metaphor for rigid or unyielding attitudes that keep people stuck in place. The next lines describe the process of moving forward as a journey from silver to gold, a transformation that requires effort and determination. The reference to streets suggests that this is a journey that takes place in the world, amid the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

The chorus provides a contrast to the optimism of the opening lines, warning that there are no pavements of gold and no more golden years. This is a reminder that life is hard and there are no guarantees of success or happiness. However, the idea of following someone to the end of the earth suggests that there is still hope, that even when things seem bleak, there is always somewhere to go. The line "before it all breaks down" implies that time is running out, that there is a sense of urgency to the need to move forward.

The second verse continues the theme of the journey, describing it as a way to escape the cold and the crushing weight of the city. The reference to the stone age ages suggests that the city represents a kind of regression, a return to a more primitive state of being. The warning "that's no way to be" suggests that there is more to life than just surviving, that it is important to have a sense of purpose and direction. The chorus repeats, with the same mix of hope and caution, urging the listener to follow and find what is waiting to be found.

One Hope 4 Heaven

Only discovered this amazing tune in 2010 when I got the World Machine double CD Set (Deluxe Edition) & couldn't believe I had missed out on it all these years! In the same respect, with the lack of great music coming out in general since the 90s, hearing it was like getting new material released from Level 42 which was just as much a pure joy as it was hearing their music for the first time in the 80s - (great memories of college days) a & now "Follow Me" is one on my top favorites from L42. I can't imagine my life without their music - it's timeless, solid, soulful, & ALWAYS SATISFIES!!!

Never appeared on a studio album, it deserves to be as there must be a studio recording of it somewhere.
