She Can't Help Herself
Level 42 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When she was a baby the world was a picture
One twist of fate took her parents away
On a highway, they're not coming home
She's alone
Then strangers appeared gave her love that she needed
Over those green hills and so far away
Like an echo, in the night she'd scream
In her dreams

She can't help herself, she can't help herself
She can't help herself crying alone
But there's so many crying like you

When nearly a woman a friend of the family
Took that away that was precious to give
She pretended nothing happened there
Through the years

She can't help herself, she can't help herself
She can't help herself crying alone
But there's so many crying like you

Now she walks alone down the lane made for lovers
Too scared to open her heart to someone
Close the door and push away the pain, once again

She can't help herself, she can't help herself
She can't help herself crying alone
All her bridges were burned long ago
She can't help herself, she can't help herself
She can't help herself crying alone
But there's so many crying like you

Don't cry, leave a light on the landing hall
Don't cry, there's a rainbow behind that door

Just when you can't take anymore
. . . there'll be someone to help you
To break down the walls
Just when you can't feel anymore
. . . there'll be someone
To help you to even the score
Just when you can't give anymore
. . . there'll be someone
To help you to break down the walls
Just when you can't take anymore

. . . there'll be someone for sure

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Level 42’s “She Can’t Help Herself” tell the story of a woman who has experienced significant trauma in her life. As a baby, she lost her parents in a tragic accident on the highway and was left alone until strangers showed up to care for her. As she grew up into a young woman, a friend of the family who was supposed to protect her instead took away something precious. Despite these traumatic experiences, the woman has tried to maintain the appearance of normalcy and suppress her pain. However, she is unable to help herself from crying alone, and she has closed her heart to the possibility of love.

The song’s message is ultimately one of hope. The lyrics encourage the woman and others who are suffering to keep going and hold onto the idea that someone will come to help them break down their walls, even when they feel like they can’t take any more. The images of a light on in the landing hall and a rainbow behind a door suggest that there is always the possibility of something better and that help is never too far away.

One of the most beautiful songs ever written…Yet hardly known, even amongst the UK Level fans!…Just a glorious song, in a proud Level, slow-song tradition…And in late 2022 we are still keeping/promoting this incredible music…"She Can't Help Herself"…

One of their most powerful songs ever. It touches me every time I listen to it.

This song and "A Kinder Eye" get me every time. I've been a fan of Level 42 forever and even though this may not display virtuosity, it shows what else they can do as songwriters.
