Star child
Level 42 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I was an infant in my mothers arms
I would watch the starlight in her face
`Cause I was reaching out to understand the cosmic charm
I am just a starchild born in space.

Way up high above the sky
All that beauty passes by
Whole worlds still unknown
And out beyond the blue
There`s a place for people too
It`s time for us to go.

I have seen the sun shine bright in paradise
I have been there, I have seen it

Repeat chorus
We have time
(In my dreams)
Time and space
While we`re young
(Floating free)
We can chase to the stars.

Searching for the magic in the universe
Guided by the stars that light my way

I have seen the sun shine bright in paradise
I am just a starchild born in space

Overall Meaning

"Star Child" by Level 42 is a song that speaks to the human desire to explore and understand the vast universe we inhabit. The opening lines of the song already set the mood as Mark King sings about his infancy, how even then he was drawn to the starlight present in his mother's face. He sets himself up as a "starchild," someone born in space with a curiosity about the cosmos that he carries with him into adulthood. In the chorus, he sings about the beauty of what lies beyond our world - places and worlds still unknown to us, and that it's time for us to go explore them.

The second verse keeps up the same tone, with King describing going to paradise and seeing the sun shine bright, which is an allusion to the space travel and what it offers. The song encourages exploration and pursuit of knowledge by saying we, as humans, have time and space while young and free to chase the stars. The song's metaphorical title, "Star Child," can be interpreted in different ways, perhaps referring to the idea that humans are creatures born from the stars or that we are explorers of space still in infancy.

Mark King....in addition to being one of the funkiest and best bass players on the planet Mark is an excellent drummer!
He actually started out on drums.
Later he moved from the Isle of Wight to London and got a job at a music store.
He played the guitar but told the store owner he played bass....which he actually did not at the time.
During the course of working, demoing gear for customers and practicing Mark became a superb bass player with an impeccable groove and feel.
Mark King also has a phenomenal vocal style....one of my favorite singers of all time.

I am putting together for my listening pleasure a compilation cd of various artists I’ve titled “Spaced Out....The Final Frontier” 🤣.....and Level 42’s “Star Child” definitely makes the list!
I really dig Mike Lindup’s singing with the spacey reverb.
Mike Lindup, Mark King, Boon Gould, Phil Gould and Wally Badarou sure to cook a spacey jazz/funk gumbo on Star Child.
I always love Level 42....great vibe and atmosphere!!!

Wow this takes me back some........

Quite a strong album for their first which was also like Duran Duran's first which they self titled & " When In Rome " in their name of just Level 42 which also helps to cement the name of any band in the heads & listeners who may go on to become their fans & Led Zeppelin used this strategy for albums 1 to 4...

I dont think Mark had succeeded yet, as in at the time of this album & maybe a few more, in finding the bass guitar he was looking for as i remembers him saying although he respected Leo Fender's electric bass guitars he knew in his head that the Precision & Jazz Bass Guitars were not going to deliver the sound he was looking for...

I read a while back & im not 100% sure that his aquiring that JD Supernatural Series 1 Bass Guitar might not have happened if the person that ordered it decided not to want it once it was built!..

I've been trying to find that story about how Mark came about getting his first JD Bass Guitar on the internet (which is where i first read it) but who knows, as maybe it was fake news but if someone finds it post the link here as id like to read it again...

It doesnt matter how he actually got round to finding it & i think its the only electric bass guitar that went to be globally recognised because of Mark King as Tommi Iommi had become the lead guitarist to promote & get more work for John Diggins Electric Guitar range but i think Mark was the only one who made the JD Supernatural Series of bass guitars a household name that no one else went on to use but if they did i never saw them & they didn't use Marks settings either...

You can always place quite a few musician's to a specific instrument like the bass guitar for instance & Tony Levin along with Pino Palladino & the late great Louis " Thunder Thumbs " Johnson were the promotional faces & players of the Leo Fender MusicMan Stingray range of bass guitar's...
Then you had Cliff Burton & John Taylor championing the Aria Pro II SB Range from the Matsomoku Made in Japan models & not to be mixed up with the Reissues that came out a while back and in my opinion look the part but dont sound like the original Matsomoku made bass guitar's...
Each model had a brilliant range of sounds from the Aria Pro II SB700/SB800/SB900 & Elite & i could go on & on as it was a good time & very exciting time to play the bass guitar as it moved more forward within bands & there were so many great new luthiers building bass guitar's that had their own unique look & sound...

There's nothing wrong with the classics like the Fender Precision & Jazz Bass Guitar's as i believe the Grandfather of Slap Larry Graham used Vox & onto predominantly playing his custom built Fender Jazz Moon Bass Guitar but by the 70s bass guitarist's were looking more & more for an electric bass guitar that could deliver a wide range of sounds or one that was easily recognisable to the player that used them as who can forget Pino Palladino's beautiful melodic & sometimes funky bass lines when playing with his Fretless MusicMan Stingray with Paul Young on his debut album " No Parlez "

By the mid 70s to mid 80s it was a great time to be a bassist as you could tell who was playing what type of bass guitar were as before it wasn't looked at as a must play instrument as the master James Jamerson weaved in & out of songs with his amazing bass lines along Carol Kaye playing on thousands of hit songs with her time with the elite group of studio session musicians " The Wrecking Crew " but by the end of the 70s Bootsy Collins/Larry Graham/Louis Johnson/Bernard Edwards & many more had made the bass guitar a very desirable instrument that could be funky or just serving the song with a great bass line that suited the genre of music it was playing in...

I for one am happy that Mark found the JD Supernatural Series 1 to be his go to bass guitar on many albums with Level 42 before switching to Rob Greens Status Bass Guitar's but it will always be the JD Supernatural Series Range Of Bass Guitar's that I'll always associate Mark Kings playing & the sound he got from them & im glad to have stopped waiting to try & get one preowned as they show up rarely & i've put my name on the waiting list at John Diggin's formy build to start this August for a Custom Version of the JD Supernatural Series 3 Bass Guitar as I've longed for one of these bass guitar's for decades & though because of the back catalogue of orders im looking at a 16 months maximum wait for it to be finished but i dont care as it will be worth the wait, plus that was the maximum wait they give out but i was told it will be ready at somepoint before that time...

Without being disrespectful to those who have lost their lives or have contracted Covid-19 & became well again, i do hope that Level 42's Anniversay Tour " From Eternity To Here " that was supposed to go ahead last October but was cancelled to this October 2021 does go ahead as i think a little bit of music played live is great for the soul & i hope to see the lads from Level 42 again this October & if you havent seen then play Live then do so as they are absolutely at the top of their game playing Live & if the audience is up for a dance & laugh from the start/which i recommend/or at somepoint during the live gig then the lads are more than happy to join & have fun while playing live just as they did back in 2016 when i last saw them Live...

In light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe & healthy wherever you are in this world...

RIP Boon Gould

This is probably the track that defined my music taste 40 years ago. That keyboard riff at around 4:05; I'm never getting tired of it.

I was 13 in 1981 and somehow I had this song on a 45 RPM, I lived on a small farm out in the middle of nowhere and I would play this song and think about the future, Now I am a 51 year old man, listening to this song, living at the beach and a full life lived well behind me, life is amazing
