almost there
Level 42 Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Watch the paper window, see the stars
News and views to show you who you are
Keep the money moving change the scene
Open up the market with our dreams

Almost there, you and I
Catch the fall, touch the sky
Love a lot, paper view
Now's the time, make your move

Keep the money moving
As long as we are using
Almost without knowing
Getting ego's burning
Freighted they stop turning
See the judge adjourning
Play your part and don't get in their way

Black and White they say you must believe
Now they found a sound that we obey
If you wait to long the tide will turn
Then there,ll be some brand new rules to learn

Almost there, you and I
Catch the fall, touch the sky
Love a lot, paper view
Now's the time, make your move

Read a million pages
Every headline ages
Nothing ever changes
There's a time for laughing

Time will soon be passing
Make your mark before you fade away

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Level 42's "Almost There" offer commentary on the state of society and societal norms. The song opens with the lines "Watch the paper window, see the stars / News and views to show you who you are." This could be interpreted as a reference to the media's influence on shaping one's identity, as well as the notion that the viewer is merely looking through a "paper window," indicating a sense of distance and perhaps superficiality in one's understanding of the world.

The next lines "Keep the money moving change the scene / Open up the market with our dreams" highlight the importance of money in driving change and progress. The song suggests that by keeping the money moving and embracing new ideas, we can create a better world.

The refrain of "Almost there, you and I / Catch the fall, touch the sky / Love a lot, paper view / Now's the time, make your move" seems to encourage listeners to take action and make their mark on the world. The repeated use of the word "almost" suggests that we are close to achieving something, but there is still work to be done.

In the second verse, the lyrics touch on the idea of conformity and blind obedience to authority. The lines "Black and White they say you must believe / Now they found a sound that we obey" suggest that society often tells us what to do and how to think, but there is a shift happening as people start to recognize the power of their own voice and individuality.

The final lines of the song "Read a million pages / Every headline ages / Nothing ever changes / There's a time for laughing / Time will soon be passing / Make your mark before you fade away" could be interpreted as a commentary on the cyclical nature of society and the importance of leaving a lasting legacy.

Thats the great thing about Level 42 as their Live versions of their song's or instrumentals are so much better Live & the Live Album " Physical Presence " recorded over 2 Live Shows is one of the best Live Album's I've listened to because for me that is when Level 42 are really at their best...

I know these last 14 month's have been difficult for everyone worldwide & either devastating for other's whether it was for those who lost their job/their smaller independent business or a loved one(s) as the fatalities of this coronavirus can never be forgotten & my thoughts are with those in India who at this very moment are dying because of insufficient access to oxygen for those who've contracted this coronavirus & need this to help them breathe & i hope this gets sorted out asap as the world has already lost too many to this coronavirus already...

Last October in 2020 Level 42 were going to kick off their 40th Anniversay Tour called " From Eternity To Here " but this Covid-19 pandemic meant that this Live Tour like any events were there would be a vast gathering of people was cancelled & i hope we have definitely turned a corner with the combination of longer Full Lockdowns & the ongoing vaccinations hopefully sees Level 42 play their Tour this October in 2021!..

If you haven't seen them Live in person then i urge you to do so as apart from being treated to an amazing set of great song's that they will play , as Level 42 always play amazing Live Gigs , who knows how much longer they will continue to tour with their Live Concert's...

How they have managed to keep going on Live Tours , with only a few breaks , since they first started out 40 year's ago is an amazing achievement but eventually & at some point in the future they may have to call it a day & quit & when this eventually happens you dont want to say to yourself " i wish i'd seen them live "
Or to those that have been to see them Live end up thinking & saying to themselves " i wish i'd seen them Live again just one more time before they stopped "

In light of this still ongoing coronavirus stay safe & healthy wherever you are in this world...

RIP Alan Murphy
RIP Rowland " Boon Gould "

" Sadly Gone, But Not Forgotten "
