Elation
Levellers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh there was once a man who had lost his own smile
And he wandered the country mile after mile
Never quite knowing what he wanted to find
For his heart it lay heavy with the weight of his mind

And he looked at the land through the tears in his eyes
For he knew that there were those who would will her to die
And he wept for his mother as he lay at her feet
And he heard a voice singing him softly to sleep

I'll be your queen, I'll be your mother - I'll be your mystical child
Be your best friend, your lover - Your wife for all time
Will there ever be another, in this life of mine
Will there ever be another, like my mystical child

So he climbed a high hill and he looked out to sea
And he heard a voice calling out softly to him
Open your heart boy for it needs to be free
And the next time you're crying come running to me

So he walked through the valleys the trees and the fields
And he came to a river where she waited for him

And they looked at the water of life flowing by
And he heard a voice saying 'you're not alone in the fight'

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Levellers' song "Elation" tell the story of a man who has lost his joy and is searching for meaning in his life. He roams around aimlessly, and his heart is heavy with the weight of his mind. He wanders through the countryside, looking for something that would make him happy. As he observes the land, he feels a sense of sorrow for those who don't value it and want to see it destroyed. He weeps for his mother, and at her feet, he hears a voice that sings him softly to sleep.

This voice, which later he hears again, tells him that he is not alone and that he can find the happiness he seeks. The man climbs a high hill, looks out to sea, and hears the voice calling out to him again. He is advised to open his heart and let it be free. The voice reassures him that in the future, he will not be alone during his struggles. A river waits for him, and there he finds his mystical child, who promises to be his queen, mother, best friend, lover, and wife for all time.

The song is about finding happiness, but more importantly, it is about finding hope. No matter how lost someone may feel, there is always a chance for them to regain hope and joy. It also encourages one to have an open mind and a heart that is free of resentment and bitterness. The mystical child and the voice in the song represent a force of pure, unconditional love that anyone can tap into at any time, and that can support them through the toughest of times.

1997. I was working in a pub in Twickenham, like a good Aussie girl does. This song came over the jukebox. I was instantly caught by it, and raced through an order desperately hoping I could get it done in time to run to the 'box to catch the band name and the title of the song. Bought "Mouth To Mouth" the next day and fell in love with the Levellers. 23 years later and counting, and this song still moves me to the depths of my soul every time, the album is still one of my favourites, and I'm chuffed that they are still performing.
