Lies
Lewis and Clark Expedition Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Say you want to be a friend of mine
See me all the time
You don't care what I do
But it all sounds the same to me

Hey, can't you see
It's just like I told you
I know you think that I've
Been stringing you along
And that I've told you a few but

[Chorus:]
Sooner or later when you say I love you
You're gonna realize that
Some of my lies are true

I never told you that I was the one
Said it just for fun
You know, you knew it too
So why so much on the telephone
I'm never home

It's just like I told you
Because it's real the way you used to make me feel
It makes it so hard to say
But nothing can change the way I feel today
Don't you see that

[Chorus: x2]

Because it's real the way you used to make me feel
It makes it so hard to say but
Nothing can change the way I feel today
Don't you see that

[Chorus: x3]

Overall Meaning

In the song "Lies" by the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the singer tells a friend that they don't care about their actions, but it all seems the same to the singer. The singer seems to be indicating a lack of personal interest from the friend to know what's really going on with the singer. The singer then mentions how their friend thinks that they have been leading them on with lies, but the singer defends themselves by saying that some of the lies they have told are true. The chorus emphasizes that sooner or later, the friend will realize this.

The second verse of the song discloses that the singer never intended to hurt their friend with false claims of love as it was just a joke. The friend knew that it was a practical joke but still obsessively calls the singer over the phone. The singer then goes back to the chorus, where the friend is cautioned once again that their perception of the song may eventually change. The last part of the song makes an attempt to explain how the friend used to make the singer feel, making it hard to let go of the friendship.

My favorite nugget: When Lewis and Clark attempted to punish a pvt. Newman with lashes while amongst the Arikara tribe, the tribe became extremely upset then crying. The chief sternly told the expedition that tribe didn't hit members of their own tribe, adults or children.

@budgetaryballistics thanks for that clarification people also think that Indians invented scalping? Leave that to the British Invaders.

Yes but immediately after it is noted that when Lewis explained to the chief why the man was to recieve the lashings, the Chief stated that he agreed the man needed punished, but that his tribe would have just killed him, and that "we would never beat someone from our tribe". (I dont have the exact words in front of me) The chief viewed killing as honorable if justified but beating wasn't.

I live in Oregon. I went to Lewis and Clark College in Portland. I’ve been to all their sites including Fort Clatsop on the coast ( where they were waiting for a supply ship that never came), and the salt cairns in Seaside, Oregon where they made salt from sea water. The men of this expedition were studs. Paddling the Columbia River both upstream and down, crossing the Cascade and Rocky Mountain ranges took incredible strength and endurance.

My daughter is going to Lewis and Clark now and she said the students want to change the name to Sacagawea college. Lol
