Lately
Leyya Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Another night for another wave
I wonder
Do I only define through some good days?
′Cause, lately
It all seems to be sort of crazy
Roll me over
I′m sober
So I get high and make it delay
'Cause, lately
I don't feel myself like I should be
Give me the night to move a minute
I need the beat to feel the ground
And so tonight, I stay a little
And stay up ′til I meet the sun
I need the night to move a minute
Give me the beat to feel the ground
And so tonight, I stay a little
And move my body to the sun
Over water
It′s hard to see, I don't feel it
Don′t bother (don't bother)
It′s just between my mind and me
I'll fake it (fake it)
′Cause it's enough to barely (barely) make it
Give me the night to move a minute
I need the beat to feel the ground
And so tonight, I stay a little
And stay up 'til I meet the sun
I need the night to move a minute
Give me the beat to feel the ground
And so tonight, I stay a little
And move my body to the sun
(Ah, ah, ah)
(Ah, ah, ah)
(Ah, ah, ah)
(Ah, ah, ah)
(Ah, ah, ah)
(Ah, ah, ah)
(Ah, ah, ah)
(Ah, ah, ah)
(Ah, ah, ah)
(Ah, ah, ah)
(Ah, ah, ah)
The first verse of Leyya's "Lately" opens with "hold me under, another night for another wave", suggesting the singer is overwhelmed and struggling to keep their head above water. They wonder whether they only define themselves through good days, questioning their sense of self and whether it is possible to define oneself without the highs and lows of life. In other words, how much of our identity is tied to our emotional experiences? They go on to admit that lately, everything seems crazy, which could represent a state of confusion and possibly even depression.
In the second verse, the singer admits to feeling sober, yet they still get high in order to delay reality. They no longer feel like themselves, admitting to not feeling how they should be. The chorus expresses the need to move, requesting the night and beat to feel the ground, staying up until the sun rises, and moving their body towards it. This could represent the need to distract oneself from reality, through partying or dancing, as a way to escape their current mental and emotional state.
Overall, "Lately" speaks to the struggles of feeling lost in one's identity and the highs and lows of life. It highlights the need to escape reality at times, but also the desire to find oneself and move through difficult times.
