My mother and my elementary school librarian were great narrators of picture books, but I really wished I could have heard my father read me a story when I was a child. Neeson's voice, the voice of my favorite Jedi Knight (ever) and one of my favorite UK actors, is better than what I wished for, an inspiration for those who wish to narrate audio books and conduct story times at libraries, like me. That same little child, who looked forward to library time more than anything, has gone to school to become a librarian herself now.

This book and audio are great and all, but I still think the movie is much better. It has much better characterization of the kids in the polar express, stuff happens on the train that doesn’t in the book, like one of the kids’ tickets going missing, and, oh yeah, the part where they go through the gift factory! I love that part! And none of it happens in the book. I like the book, but to me it feels like a very brief and abridged summary of the movie.

There's two versions of this recording: Liam Neeson's, and the original 1989 recording starring William Hurt. I find Neeson's voice more engaging, but William Hurt's recording featured beautiful background music and better use of audio. If they'd have combined both versions, with Liam Neeson's voice and the score and sounds of Hurt's original, it would've been fantastic.

This exact recording and very book was my childhood! Every Christmas, I would always listen to this (on CD) and be filled with wonder as I listened to Liam Neeson, heard the effects and music that made my heart flutter in excitement, and was captivated by the beautiful illustrations of the book. Over and over again I never tired of it...and I'm now twenty-two...and yes, will obviously listen to it at other times of the year sometimes. ;-) The movie made from this will never be as good as this original masterpiece...it's just not the same. I can only hear this version, mainly because of my memories. It made me truly believe as a child that the only reason I would miss the Polar Express is because I never could stay up all night for it. But I always believed it did come by my house. :-) So, as I listen to this, I go back and relive the grand imaginations and what I believed could be real, and I'll pretend I'm little again. I know this comment's a little late, but I just felt like listening to my favorite childhood story, even though it's not Christmas yet, and I wanted to thank you for sharing it! :-)

One of my personal traditions as a child at christmas was to receive a book from Santa. I remember reading and loving it. It's still very much a favorite of mine now, so many years later. I still hang the gold ornament that came with the book on my own tree. It still shines as brightly as it did 20 years ago. Thank you for posting this. It was as I had imagined it to be when I first read it.

I love this story, and am thankful that my kindergarten students and I can enjoy these stories over hot chocolate. My own children as well enjoy these. Such a great time of enjoying the magic of Christmas with my students as a kindergarten teacher, and as a parent with my own children!
