I would like to see a dramatic reduction in the amount of plastic bottles and plastic bags that are manufactured each year with an aim to halt it completely.

Soft drinks companies ought to use more glass bottles as they can be reused and recycled more easily.

I reduced my plastic usage by purchasing a military style metal water bottle a few years ago. I can refill it from the tap at home or at work and it can be reused many times over for years. I no longer need to waste money on plastic bottled water.

I now have milk delivered to my home in glass bottles as opposed to plastic bottles.

When out shopping at the supermarket, I rarely use plastic bags. I tend to look out for an empty cardboard box to put my shopping in.

That would be great...if recycling actually solved the problem. 1) Recycling is an energy-intensive and polluting industry. 2) Plastic can only be recycled a few times before its quality degrades to the point where it has to go to landfill.

If we want to solve the problem, we need to reduce our consumption of plastic.

Not true. PET can be recycled many times, an can from many other things. Recycling plastic is one of the most energy efficient recycling efforts when compared to paper or metal.

Great video, and very informative.

Though option 3 is the lesser of the evils, the subsequent plastic products that are made will still at some point enter the waste chain. Hopefully there will be better reclamation facilities for these secondary products by the time they are beyond their usable life, but we're already hearing about the concerns of microplastic fibres from clothing made of recycled plastic which are shedding and getting into our air, soil and water.

Cutting down on consumer use of plastic use has got to be one of the main strategies, and we have to act now.

I wish you could do another video, explaining how most types of plastic cannot be recycled, and the ones that can, are only recyclable once or twice before they are too damaged and are downgraded until they end up in the oceans and landfills too. It's a good step to recycle plastic, but the reality is it costs a lot of energy and it still dosn't keep the pollution away. It is best to find alternatives like reusable, aluminum (infinitely recycled and costs less energy to recycle than to make new) and glass!

This is only true to an extent, at least today in October 2022, but the crux of your argument is that recycling plastic is not sustainable and that is true.

No matter the methods we employ to make plastic as reusable as possible, it will eventually need to be thrown away, and new molds will be made.
There may exist an amount plastic we can produce per year that is sustainable, but which plastic products that would include and how much is frankly a question we are no longer in a position to ask ourselves.

The 1st bottle's story is tragic. Can't imagine how it feels, lonely, unloved.
The 2nd bottle's story is as bad as the 1st but, the feeling of being trashed into a dump is just unreal, as the bottle too, has a heart of its own. This story is bad as well.
The 3d bottle's story is a happy one, as the bottle rejoices over being loved in another form, this story is the best one.
The story that i liked was the 3d. People have to take action on mother nature! Love the video!

There are so many alternatives available in the market and I am happy that countries are willingly taking respective initiatives to cut down the usage of PLASTIC. why to REUSE plastic when we can completely avoid their usage in certain areas? @Wispy plastic degrades over time (most varieties of plastic become less strong after being repeatedly compressed/melted/shredded to be used in other products) and will generate microplastics. After a certain point, they can't be reused anymore.

Great video! Just a note about the end positive note regarding bottle 3 - Plastic cannot be recycled indefinitely, you can only recycle plastic 2-3 times, so in any case at least 1 third of the plastic that is produced is here on planet earth forever.

The solution is NOT to buy plastic whenever possible. In The Story of Stuff, a book by Annie Leonard, she says that recycled plastic bottles are seldom recycled into useful stuff. Usually, they are "downcycled" into less useful stuff like plastic pellets for packing goods into boxes.

In Finland the tap water is cleaner than the bottled water sold around the world. Here you also get back money for returning empty bottles and cans, so in Finland 80% of plastic drinking bottles, 90% cans (beer etc) and 98% of glass bottles are returned and recycled/reused :)

Keep in mind that many plastics can only e recycled once, maybe twice before they can't be anymore, because recycling degrades it and then they are either down cycled into nonrenewable materials for fabrics or sent to the landfill.

But keep in mind, not all plastics are recyclable. A lot of waste management companies do not accept all plastics and has to be a certain number stamped on the bottle.

its funny how we think of plastic as only bottles (at least that's what i am reading in the comments I see) but the amount of plastic we use such as food bags/containers and single-use beverage cups and wrappers from restaurants is HUGE. working at a coffee establishment my self i see roughly 100-200 people a day (depending on busyness and my shift) buying iced coffee drinks in plastic cups and maybe 1/6th have reusable cups maybe even less, not to mention the amount of plastic 1 gallon jugs of milk used. The worst part is many of these big companies dont blink an eye lash at the amount of waist they produce behind the counter but yet try to call them selves a recycling company to the public, claiming that they use recycled plastic in their cups but dont care about the plastic that wraps all the frozen food or the jugs of milk that are usually just thrown away because in a rush you are not thinking about "oh this carton should go in the recyling" which some stores dont even have! you are just simply just trying to keep your 190 degree soy latte with no foam from bubbling over your steam pitcher while having three other people asking you "is this my drink?" when you clearly had no interactions with that customer thus far and trying to keep the drive thru moving because its rush time for kids getting out of school and making with 20-60 people coming thought in 30 min you are making roughly a drink per min. with that said you are not thinking about the environment, you just want to keep people happy. The bad news of big corporations seeing the big dollar and not what is happening to the planet.

environmental studies should be a core subject. children at an early age, will learn about the plastic problem, global warming, deforestation, and the benefits of going vegan. this would kill the issue at the root, and allow the kids to grow up as environmentally conscious people, creating a new era of humans.

@mendebil living "zero waste", as the term is popularly used, does not necessarily mean forsaking all modern amenities, it is more about becoming mindful, intentional, and responsible in regards to one's environmental impact. Also "country life" isn't automatically zero waste? I assume you're referring to how the term "zero waste" denotatively sounds, but if it is something that gets taught, the first impression of what it sounds like won't be so much of an issue..

I found the solution I think for at least the sorting out of all these domestic food packages. Each package should have a durable really very sticky label which normally should stay on under normal domestic situations.
It doesn't matter next what type of plastic the bottle is but the color of the label should betray it's composition : PE, PET, PS etc..
Automatic sorting should now be easy and 100% accurate thanks to the very specific, colorful label. After sorting out, that sticky label can be dissolved with a specific chemical,.
Who knows even the usual industrial, aggressive very alkaline cleaning products will suffice.
If we have a completely pure stream of one type plastic, then only can we convert this back easily to the original monomer.
Anything which didn't had this clear identification ends up in a mixed stream but even that can be recycled, though energetically less positive. We can pyrolyse this plastic and make some very good fuel from it, also usable for new plastics. This pathway can't compete economically but it must be done for the environment. The pyrolysis process needs to be optimized so that the reactor is well insulated and once on temperature, keeps it easily.

Why can't we go back to using glass bottles that are returned to the manufacturers, where they are washed and used again? If corporations take on the initiative to not produce plastic we don't even need to worry about recycling.

How do you wash glass bottle? What happens to the water used to clean the old glass bottle? What is the co2 footprint for producing a glass bottle and a plastic one? How about the bigger amount of co2 because of the logistics? The problem with the plastics is not the plastic itself.. it’s the habit of the humans of just trowing it away. The plastic is a really good material... we just need to learn how to reuse it.

It is still happening in the Philippines. We can buy soda from glass bottles, bring back the glasses from the store, then from there, a delivery from the company of soda (ex. Coca cola) picks up the glass bottles. They clean it, refill it then deliver it to the store. Same with water, Filipino families buy a galloon of water, same process with the bottled soda. We return the galloon, a company or refilling station will refill it, they send it back to us. And the cycle repeats.

You forgot to mention bottle four which is combusted at high temperatures at a combined power- and heat plant, leaving only CO2 and steam.
Recycling is better, but this is an easier first step away from landfills. In Denmark, almost all non-metallic everyday garbage is disposed this way. More and more recycling is also being introduced, but only gradually, since this requires that people put things in the right bin, and that takes years to learn :)

This video encourages using SUP (single use plastic) by means of recycling as the answer. However, the amount of energy (carbon) used in the process of down-cycling offsets any benefit of recycling. We need to focus on refusing, reusing (refill not landfill) then reducing and recycling. Plastic is not sustainable and not a viable option in a rapidly warming ecosystem

Recycling is probably better in some ways, but the processes involved in recycling plastic also creates harmful byproducts and emit significant amount of greenhouse gases. Beside recycling only can be done a few times before the plastic becomes unusable. The best approach is to use less plastic (carry cloth bags to groceries, etc), and re-use plastic (put fosset water in a used plastic bottle for consumption rather than buying bottled water).

Great video showing the harmful effects of wasted plastic and how recycling can provide new materials to manufacture everyday items.
This is similar to America's food waste problem. It's extremely detrimental to the environment, and it occurs simply because consumers are not educated about wastefulness in America. People are not disciplined enough to plan out their purchases before they buy. It seems so convenient to just pick up a disposable plastic bottle at the store for the water and throw it out after finishing it, and consumers believe they aren't wasting - they are, after all, drinking the precious water. However, they are making an important exchange - one round of hydration for an addition to a landfill that cannot be ignored.
Also, there's an even better option than recycling - buying a reusable bottle will serve its purpose as well as reduce the waste issue which is not, and has not been for a long time, negligible.

Plastic can't really be recycled. A small portion, like 10%, can be reused maybe half a dozen times then it becomes too weak and has to be thrown away. So definitely do put it in the recycling because it does help slow down production of new plastic when you reuse it but try to not buy any plastic, and the few items you do buy try to repurpose if possible.

Recycling is not a solution. Only not producing and not buying anything made of plastic is. Plastic industry executives have been aware already in the fifties where this was going to, but propaganda helped them. Also the bank managers helped them by financing them. What's odd is that they knew they were poisoning their own children, in the long term, not to mention ours. It's time to close all of the plastic factories as they are polluting the water, the landfills and whole of the food chain.

The thing is - if we close plastic factories then we kind of all die because it wouldn't be too far of a leap to assume that more than half of the products we use indirectly and directly are based on plastics or utilize plastics in some function, and many of these products' plastic usage cannot be substituted out for other materials

Are you forgetting that plastic "happened" like only 100 years ago whereas civilization is here for a bit longer. Also, theoretically you could substitute the plastic with e.g. rubber, wood as it is not a crucial/functioning part of most of the products (electronic devices...).

Who's saying anything about the previous century because you could totally replace plastic, save yr. money and environment. Plastic gets broken easily and ok if the biodegradable one was produced, but that's not the case. Also, alternative systems would work, for example when going to the store for a product, for example cleaning product/detergent/shampoo, the buyers could always take the same previously purchased/branded/luxury designed container (metal, alluminium..), but that would not be in the interest of the plastic industry. Just remember when going to the beach and spotting a plastic trash, it totally ruins the impression. Yes, what about the 3D printers...well, leave it in the digital form and enjoy the meadow/beach...

We've just been to some clensing ritual , that generally involves vomiting. The problem with the plastics is that it can be recycled ONLY up to 7 times (polluting the water and the air during the process), and then it gets dumped back into the ocean/landfills poisoning all around it, including you. The only solution is the stop buying anything made of it and urge the companies to stop producing it, because the planet will get destroyed. It's that serious.

Don't throw away that plastic, sell it (wish it was that easy) Two things that could reduce plastic waste: #1 This is already being used in some states - The consumer pays a deposit to the retailer when buying an item that comes in a plastic bottle, container and receives a refund when the empty container is returned to a supermarket or other redemption center. #2 Companies need to stop selling items that are diluted with water. for example when you buy detergent it's 60 to 90% water, same for some other products we buy. Less water added to dilute a liquid product will mean less plastic waste.

I find it funny considering that some people blame it on the plastics industry itself when in reality YOU are the one that should recycle. I'm currently going for plastics engineering and yes there are biodegradable plastic. And yes it does actually bio degrade.

There's a difference between a dump and a landfill. A dump is just a big place to dump garbage, as seen in this video. A landfill is strictly regulated to insure that it cannot contaminate ground water.

So I have two options: The first one is to throw away my plastic bottle at the landfill and therefore pollute soil and water. My other option is to recycle it and pollute the air (the factories pollute the air for me), use oil for transportation and distribution. Also the recycling factories have to use power (fossil fuel). Then I cannot re-recycle it more times, maybe once more, I don't know. After all the plastic bottle will end up at the landfill.......... I prefer the former option. The solution is to make reusable bottles or bottles made of glass or paper
