Words
Life Without A Jacket Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I bet that I can predict every move that you're about to make.
It's so easy to pick you apart when you take your cues from people who have no heart.

So yeah, live it up with them: "your friends".
But don't call me when you need more than emptiness.
I've seen you for you and now I'm through.

You don't have to make a choice, but my god make a point.
The last time I saw you, you called me out.
You said I had nothing to shout about.

You told me that everything was falling apart.
You got your tools, you went to work, you tore out my heart.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Words" by Life Without A Jacket appear to be directed towards a person who is not true to themselves, and instead takes cues from others who lack empathy. The singer of the song claims to be able to predict this person's every move and criticizes them for living their life without a sense of purpose. The use of the word "emptiness" implies that this person's lifestyle is devoid of meaning and substance.

The chorus reinforces the singer's stance that they will not be there for this person when they inevitably reach out for help. The line "I've seen you for you and now I'm through" suggests that the singer has given up on this individual and their attempts to make them see reason have been fruitless.

In the final verse, the singer recounts a confrontation wherein the subject of the song criticized them for having nothing to shout about. This is juxtaposed against the fact that this person was tearing out the singer's heart, suggesting that they are guilty of projecting their own perceived shortcomings onto others.

@@Jjb-gk4ce "Come with me, Marine," says the poge colonel, putting the little green notebook back into his pocket. "I want
to show you something."
I step over to the jeep. The poge colonel pauses for dramatic effect, then pulls a poncho off a lump on the back
seat. The lump is a Marine lance corporal in the fetal position. In the lance corporal's neck are punctures--many,
many of them.
The poge colonel grins, bares his vampire fangs, takes step toward me.
I punch him in the chest with my wooden bayonet.
He freezes. He looks down at the wooden bayonet. He looks at the deck, then at the sky. Suddenly his
wristwatch is very interesting. "I...uh...I've got no more time to waste on this unprofitable encounter...and get a
haircut!" From pg 49 of the Short Timers PDF

Joker realises that he is smarter than the general and tries to avoid answering the question by pretending he is ignorant. Classic!

"The what?" "The Duality of Man. The Jungian thing Sir!", <massive silence>, "who's side are you on son?"
Classic.

I'm on humankinds side, These so called governments divide humankind. Some Nation, calling it's self  indivisible under God, You people are so divided.

@AW71

Isaac Gunn That's probably where Joker was going with that.  "Who's side are you on?"  "Our side, sir."  Ours meaning the humankind side.

@macree01

Maybe divided is better. Im not too anxious to establish some world government that could have the potential to become a world dictatorship over night if the wrong person gets in. No one deserves that much power and really your thinking is just flawed. Its never going to happen, countries will always exist.
