Toes
Lights Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you are a cliffhanger ending
I'm the one that doesn't know anything
Like a magpie and a ring,
I'm always going to be looking right to you

Oh, you capture my attention
Carefully listening,
Don't wanna miss a thing,
Keeping my eyes on you
Got me on my toes

If I were to hide out on the sea,
You'd be whispering from the westerlies
In any book I'll ever read,
You'd be the line that sticks out to me,
Out to me

Oh, you capture my attention
Carefully listening,
Don't wanna miss a thing,
Keeping my eyes on you

Oh, you capture my attention
I'm anticipating,
I'm watching, I'm waiting
For you to make your move
Got me on my toes
Got me on my toes
Got me on my toes

Got me on my toes
Got me on my toes

Oh, you capture my attention
Carefully listening,
Don't wanna miss a thing,
Keeping my eyes on you

Oh, you capture my attention
I'm anticipating,
I'm watching, I'm waiting
For you to make your move
Got me on my toes

Got me on my toes
Got me on my toes

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Lights's song "Toes" are a beautiful depiction of a person falling in love and being captivated by their significant other. The metaphorical comparison of the singer being a "cliffhanger ending" and their love interest being the one who knows everything creates an image of the singer being unable to exist without their partner. They are like a magpie and a ring, always looking towards their love interest. This shows the singer's dependence on their love interest, and how they have captured their attention completely.

The lyrics also show the intensity of the singer's love, as they refuse to miss a single thing and carefully listen to everything their love interest says. The lines "keeping my eyes on you" and "got me on my toes" create a sense of anticipation and excitement, as the singer is always eagerly waiting for their partner's next move. This sense of constant vigilance can also be interpreted as a reflection of the singer's fear of losing the attention of their love interest.

The second verse of the song talks about the singer imagining themselves on the sea, far away from everything, but still feeling their partner's presence. This further emphasizes how much the singer is in love with their partner, and how they can't escape their thoughts even if they were far away. The line "You'd be the line that sticks out to me" shows how even in something as mundane as reading a book, the singer's love interest will always find a way to be on their mind.

Overall, the lyrics of "Toes" are a beautiful depiction of the intensity of love, the fear of losing it, and the sense of complete surrender that comes with being in love.

Ugh, this brings me back to the chilly autumn nights in 2011, back home in Canada. I would walk home from volleyball practice, listening to this on my iPod touch. Then winter rolled around and snow blanketed the ground- and I would just walk around town listening to the Siberia album.

I was only 16 at the time, but felt so connected to this music. Omg I miss those days so much

@philpower_

Man oh man, minus the volleyball part, this had me wondering who was spying on me back then and passing off my life and times as their own! 😂 Minus the volleyball part, I can say 100% same. What a time and what a sound to go with it.

I share the feeling. I dont have any words for it. Me and my friends journeying around in the cold, from place to place just to move around and feel alive. It was so good. We had no idea how good it really was, we really really didnt. We werent supposed to, because now those memories keep us going

@sabreenasnow119

I loved reading this ah

@roralize1358

I was 9 in the winter of 2011. Younger, but those similar feelings of chilling to music with my CD player are memories that I will always hold close. I miss the early 2010s, and this song screams that time period.

@BraveClam

Very similar here - I was 18 just out of high school, moved halfway across the states to work in North Dakota oil fields and found this on a radio station out there in 2011 haha
Very cold for months on end

That is amazing. The military has a base near where she is from, as I recall.
