When Lil B titled his last digital label released mixtape I'm Gay, he received several death threats. Although he is heterosexual, he says the title is a message of support to the LGBT community. Referring to the alternative definition of gay, he says he is gay because he is happy. Following the death threats, he added "I'm Happy" in parenthesis to the album's title. I'm Gay received positive reviews with many fans commenting on the album's wide variety of positive messages and noting the unique beats and lyrical styles not common to mainstream hip hop. He raps about many controversial issues including race relations, poverty, humanity, and the justice system. The album also, according to many fans, shows the "true" side of Lil B. It entered the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart at #56 and the Heatseekers Albums chart at #20 for the week of July 16, 2011. It is for sale on iTunes but Lil B also uploaded it to the Internet for free, posting a link to it on Twitter and Facebook saying, "for all my fans who don't have $10 to buy my album, here it is for free."
Lil B typically releases at least one mixtape every month; so far in 2012 he has released 13 mixtapes - 4 in July alone. One of those released in July was the massive 848-song, nearly 5GB collection of Based Freestyles, which is his largest release to date. In 2013, hip-hop listeners voted Lil B as the greatest rapper of all time.

Hustling since '89, you feel me?
Bruh, give me all them racks
It's like I'm automatic
Bitch, I'm from the west, coast, yeah
Bitch, I'm real as fuck
I might go off and rob 'em
And you can't tell me nothing
Waterfront daddy
What I'm riding in? Old school Caddy
I got a mask on, with my gloves on
Black hoody on, with my Vans on
I'm in the under whip
I got like three of 'em
And I can choose my car
I got like three of 'em
And I can choose my bitch
I got like three of 'em
Ask me if I'm cheating
I'll marry three of 'em yeah
I'm on the grind, bitch I'm on the grind
(yeah)
I'm on the grind, II'm on the grind (all day)
I'm on the grind, bitch I'm on the grind
(yeah)
I'm on the grind, bitch I'm on the grind
Working every day, I'ma get it
I'ma be honest
Making clean cash what I love
Make it rain hundreds
Twamp sacks up in here, let me see some money
I'm on my grind
Had purple zips every morning
We copped dub sacks, what I'm selling often
Then I'm breaking bitches down
Like morning coffee
Excuse me sir, I got work if you need it bad
We got laptops, cellphones, and minicams
I'm on the internet, because I'm online
I got gold teeth, like that nigga Shyne
Tried to give me years, like my nigga Shyne
I told them haters "watch"
Let a brother shine
Yeah, it's real boss shit
I first made the paper, off hitting licks
And I'm not a bitch, I'm hella fine
I had to tell these suckers
That I'm getting mine
I'm on the grind, bitch I'm on the grind
(BasedGod)
I'm on the grind, I'm-I'm on the grind
(Based Lord) bitch I'm on the grind
Bitch I'm on the grind (yeah)
I'm on the grind, I'm, I'm on the grind
(yeah) bitch I'm on the grind
Bitch I'm on the grind (BasedGod)
I'm on the grind, bitch I'm on the grind
(Based Lord)
I'm on the grind, bitch I'm on the grind
(you feel me?)
I'm on the grind, I'm, I'm on the grind
Bitch
(I'm on my motherfucking grind, you feel me?)
I'ma tell you niggas
I'm on the grind like a hundred thousand
It's your boy, Lil B yeah
Rawest rapper alive in this thing
Telling you man, that I've been on my grind
From sunup to sundown you feel me?
Sunup never go down, you feel me?
Sunup the bitch, you feel me?
Lil B for "Lil Boss", man
The song "I'm on the Grind" by Lil B is an autobiographical account of the artist's life and his unapologetic pursuit of success. The first lines of the song, "Brang dang grinding since '89, hustling since '89, you feel me?" establish that the artist has been grinding since he was young, which, in turn, makes him the experienced and skilled "grinder" he currently is. The lyrics "What I'm riding in? Old school Caddy," and "I got a mask on, with my gloves on, black hoody on, with my Vans on," imply that Lil B is involved in illegal activities such as robbing and stealing. Despite this, Lil B asserts his authenticity with the line "bitch, I'm real as f*ck" and his insistence to do things his way, "And you can't tell me nothing." The artist's ability to choose what he wants, whether it's his cars or his women, highlights his power and superiority.
The lyrics "Had purple zips every morning, we copped dub sacks," indicate that Lil B was a drug dealer. He also mentions his internet presence, where he sells and conducts his business through cell phones and laptops. This verse shows the artist's resourcefulness. He makes "clean cash," enabling him to live a luxurious life. The statement, "Tried to give me years like my nigga Shyne, I told them haters 'watch,' let a brother shine," alludes to Lil B's past run-ins with the law, and how, despite it all, he continues to thrive in the rap industry. The infectious chorus "I'm on the grind" reiterates that Lil B is determined and unstoppable.
Overall, "I'm on the Grind" is a triumphant and honest track that sees Lil B reflecting on his difficult journey to success. The song demonstrates the artist's persistent attitude and his unyielding drive for greatness, even if it is not always through legal means.
