Growing up, Boosie was hardened by the many difficult experiences he was put through. His neighborhood, notorious for drugs and violence, was a place feared by the general population. To outsiders, it was a jungle, to residents, it was life. Boosie got very involved in basketball to stay off the streets, and was actually expected to move on to college level basketball.
At 14 years old, Boosie moved in to live with his grandmother after his father was murdered over drugs. Growing up with no father figure and without a strong guiding hand, Boosie turned to drugs and crime. After being expelled from school, Boosie picked up freestyling and began to get serious about his music. Living in the 225, Boosie had no contacts, no real means of exposure. Lil Boosie teamed up with Baton Rouge rapper C-Loc in the late 1990s and made his debut on C-Loc's 5th album, "It's a Gamble", which also featured Three Six Mafia, South Park Mexican, and the rest of the Concentration Camp. This album was a saving grace for C-Loc, as he was slowly losing popularity. Releasing this album put him back in the spotlight, as he had a new young tallented rapper at his side. Baton Rouge couldn't get enough. Shortly afterwards, Boosie released his debut CD, "Youngest of the Camp", which sold over 10,000 units and featured fellow up and coming Baton Rouge rapper Max Minelli, which was exactly what boosie needed to jump start his career. The album spread like wildfire, every hood in Baton Rouge had flyers up for it, everybody was playing it.
After the incarceration, Boosie once again turned back to the streets. Ultimately, his behavior led to him also being incarcerated. At this point, Boosie felt as though he was a failure. However, fate lent Boosie a hand, and Boosie had an opportunity to join an up and coming record label called Trill Entertainment aka Trill Ent which was backed by Pimp-C of UGK. Trill signed Boosie and assisted him in bring his legal issues to an end. Soon after, Boosie and Trill independently released the CD "For my Thugs" under TrillEnt. This release went on to sell over 15,000 copies. Later in the summer of 2003, Boosie co-starred with one of his label-mates, Webbie, on the album "Ghetto Stories" which also went on to sell well over 15,000 copies.
Again paired up with Webbie, Lil Boosie's 2004 release, "Gangsta Musik" is what really gained him popularity. This CD featured the ever popular songs "Swerve" (which later made an appearance in the movie "Hustle and Flow"), "Give Me That", and "Bad Bitch". This was Boosie's first really popular album, actually penetrating the borders of Louisiana and reaching far beyond.
Boosie's talent was now undeniable, and he caught the eye of some Universal Records representatives. In late January of 2005, Boosie signed a deal with Universal, and released the CD "Boosie Bad Azz". This album, backed and promoted by Universal Records, was his strongest yet. Boosie continues to gain popularity at an astonishing rate, and is no stranger to trouble with the law. Already incarcerated for probation violation on drug and gun charges, the Trill Entertainment rapper and two associates (one of them only 17 years old) were indicted on first-degree murder charges by a grand jury on Thursday, June 17, 2010. The men are accused of being involved in the shooting of 35-year-old Terry Boyd in his own house in October. District attorney Hiler Moore stated that the killing seemed to be "over turf" and that if Lil Boosie is convicted the death penalty is not out of the question. The same day, Hatch was also indicted on multiple drug and conspiracy charges for smuggling large amounts of codeine, ecstasy and marijuana into prison with intent to distribute. His girlfriend, a prison guard and a fellow inmate were also charged as co-conspirators. In addition to these charges, prosecutors believe the 27-year-old rapper may have been involved in at least five other slayings.

It's like what the fuck you want me to do?
I guess be unhappy right?
It seems like you don't understand
I'm on a mission
Trying to get us out this ghetto land
I seen mom shed tears for years
And all I did was keep finding ways
To load up my nine
Mama please forgive me
I swear it's hurting my soul
I gotta swallow my pride
Cause you the queen of my throne
I feel alone
Shivering & cold
With no where to go
I just broke up with my girl
I got caught with them hoes
It's been a month I haven't seen my son
I feel like I'm done
I need affection baby girl
That's why I'm searching for love
I close my eyes
Hoping this is just a bad dream
I'm slippin' in to darkness
Jesus come & save me
Tell me it's okay
I know I made mistakes
I wanna go away from this cloudy day
They tell me that I'm hopeless
Trying to break my focus
This hundred dollar deal shit
Tells me they don't know shit
I've been gone a while away from you
And I hope you overstand
That I've got to do what I must do
To be a better man
Cause if I was just to act a fool
Do nothing with myself
Then all my blessings would be cursed
My world would crumble in
It's a joy when I sit down
And think of the good times that we have
And what we do to make it through
When the good turns to the bad
Well I hope you'll find it in your heart
And know these words are true
And please don't fuss
Because I must go do what I must do
Hey baby don't you worry
Even though the road is rocky
I'll be coming home to you again
And if you thought that I was lost
I have to burn my cross
Now I'm free from all these chains
Been gone a while away from you
And I hope you overstand
That I've got to do what I must do
To be a better man
Cause if I was just to act a fool
Do nothing with myself
Then all my blessings would be cursed
My world would crumble in
Danny when you grow up
I'll tell you where I been at
I'll tell you what I been through
I'll tell you where I lived at
Your daddy always loved you
Son your daddy always cared
No matter what your mom says
I'll always be there
From the moment you was born
I always rocked you to sleep
My eyes couldn't believe
You were just like me
I sell drugs
I'ma thug
I come from the gutter
Just an ordinary gangsta
I'ma hood muthafucka
I got a little talent
So my friends mad at me
They hate me low key
When I consider them family
Your hand shake
Ain't really matching your smile
You use to hug me before
But I could give a fuck now
Walking with my head down
Trying to act like it's cool
But my tears keep falling
When I think about you
I just wish you could support my lifestyle
You pushed me away
But girl I'm needing you right now
I've been gone a while away from you
And I hope you overstand
That I've got to do what I must do
To be a better man
Cause if I was just to act a fool
Do nothing with myself
Then all my blessings would be cursed
My world would crumble in
I've been gone a while away from you
And I hope you overstand
That I got to do what I must do
To be a better man
"You Better Ask Somebody" by Lil Boosie is a song that speaks to the struggles of making the right choices in life, particularly when living in a low-income community. Boosie tries to change his lifestyle that revolves around guns, drugs, and women. However, he finds himself alone, heartbroken, and struggling to keep faith. The opening lines of the song show his frustration, where he states that he doesn't understand people anymore, suggesting a feeling of disconnectedness with society. He then goes on to explain that he is on a mission to get himself and his family out of the ghetto life. He recalls how he watched his mother cry for years, and instead of helping, he added to the problems by resorting to guns.
Boosie's desire to change hits home for him when he realizes that he is alone and unhappy despite breaking up with his girlfriend and getting caught with other women. He hasn't seen his son in weeks and feels like a failure. He longs for love and affection, someone to reassure him that everything will be okay. He also feels like giving up, as those around him tell him he is hopeless and focus on the troubles he's brought upon himself. He tells Jesus that he wants to get out of this cloudy day, indicating how desperate he feels.
As Boosie tries to change his life, he fears that his family may not understand him or his actions. He emphasizes that his need to better himself and the curses that may come with remaining stagnant far outweigh the joys. He encourages his son, Danny, to be proud of him, despite how others may view him. Boosie ends by stating that he's been away for a while and has had to endure a lot, but he hopes his family will understand that he is trying to be a better man.
