Beginning his career, from 2011 to 2012, Durk released his debut, un-official mixtape, I’m a Hitta which was released on August 26, 2011. On April 3, 2012, Durk released his sophomore mixtape, a sequel to his previous tape, I’m Still a Hitta. Durka later released his third mixtape on November 5, 2012, titled Life Ain’t No Joke
Like many drill artists, Durk’s early career was plagued with legal issues and accusations of violence. These issues eventually led to his shows being canceled.
From 2013 to 2015 Durk released a total of four projects, three mixtapes, and an album. October 10, 2013, marked the release of the first Signed to the Streets, one of Durk’s most notable mixtapes and the start of a series. In the summer of 2014, specifically July 4, Durk released a sequel to Signed to the Streets and released Signed to the Streets 2 featuring his “What You Do to Me”.
2015 would be an enormous year for Lil Durk as in July 2015, Durk released his debut studio album, Remember My Name which featured his Jeremih-assisted “Like Me.” Later that year, Durk released his sixth mixtape 300 Days 300 Nights which included his then-girlfriend, Dej Loaf-assisted, “My Beyoncé.”
From 2016 to 2017, Durk released a total of four solo projects and one collaborative project. On July 22, 2016, Durk released his sophomore studio album, Lil Durk 2X accompanied by features such as Future, Young Thug, Yo Gotti and more. Ending the year, Durk released They Forgot, his seventh mixtape.
Beginning 2017, in February, Durk released his seventh mixtape, Love Songs for the Streets, which is deemed as one of his most notable projects including features from Moneybagg Yo and YFN Lucci. Later that year in August, Durk released a collaborative EP with Lil Reese titled Supa Vultures; the project included his “Nobody Knows”. On October 19, 2017, Durk carried on with his Signed to the Streets series with the highly anticipated Signed to the Streets 2.5. The mixtape included the start of yet another song series titled “India” dedicated to his fiancé India Cox otherwise known as India Royale.
In 2018, Durk released two projects, he began with Just Cause Y'all Waited, Durk’s highest-charting mixtape peaking at #57 on the Billboard 200. Durk then released a sequel to Love Songs for the Streets titled Love Songs 4 the Streets 2. Durk was extremely successful prior to this album, however, many say that this exact album broke Durk into the mainstream rap industry as it had been his first project to chart in the top 10 of the Billboard 200.
2020 was an even better year for Lil Durk as he released his almost chart-topping Just Cause Y’all Waited 2 which peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200. It was later followed up with a deluxe.
The scars of violence run deep in Durk’s discography, particularly arising from the loss of OTF members Nunu (Nuski) and King Von at the hands of gunfire. Both artists are commemorated on his album The Voice, for which a deluxe version was released in 2021.
Anointing himself as the voice of the streets, Durk followed up this project with the release of the collaborative album The Voice of the Heroes with Lil Baby which brought the Chicago native artist his first #1 album.
Marking his first solo #1 album, in March 2022, Lil Durk released a melodramatic take on the deaths of his loved ones through an album titled 7220. The album became Durk’s first solo project to top the charts.

Missed out on my kids life for a year and I gotta accept it
Certain days, niggas never came to my shows and I felt neglected
Growin' up, seein' my uncle dyin' in his bed, that shit made me reckless
Pourin' up and I ain't never sharin' my meds and I ain't bein' extra
And I paid like two of my niggas bonds before I bought a necklace
I done seen my brother stack his bricks up and it look like Tetris
Told the bitch she can't hide the smell of my cologne, she gotta go change her panties
Take care of your family and them kids 'cause I'm too big on family
Fuck them fast cars, before that shawty 'nem was gon' slide in Camrys
I'ma give my lawyer an extra dub because it come in handy
Felt like I'ma vomit off this Perc' 'cause I don't take no
Voice of the hero
I'm the voice of the hero
Voice of the hero
Voice of the hero
See, I'm the voice, Baby, he the hero
Baby, he the hero
I'm the voice, but Baby, he the hero
But Baby, he the hero
I wasn't even tryna be no idol
I put niggas on, and all of the sudden they feel entitled
Put the barbers on 'em, you only get this kit when you got a title
I'm exhausted, I been workin' shift-to-shift, but I keep fightin'
Not my fault if I don't miss your likeness
And I'm still with Ced still
We the ones, for real, for real
I just got two hundred for a walk through, I'll still drill
High-speed chase in a Dodge Stratus, I can still peel 'em
I be tryna put on a smile for 'em but I don't really feel 'em
I just spent three-fifty on a Richard for the second time
I showed all my niggas in the trenches it's a better life
Never get too big for me to listen, I'll take your advice
I just told Durk, "We rich forever if we play it right"
Just keep on bein' the voice, I'll be the hero
And everything I got is a profit, started with zero
I can never turn my back on my apartment, that's where I come from
And I'm just gettin' started, relax, wait 'til I warm up
I done been to jail too many times, it feel like karma
Everywhere I sleep, I keep my stick, what I need an alarm for?
Police caught me in the cut, I had to walk out with my arms up
Ain't too big to pray last minute, I put my palms up
Yeah, flood my system with these Perkies
Took the bitch to eat out at Thirteen, she was squirtin'
I just cashed out on my bitch, Celine to match her Birkin
All this shit these bitches textin' me, just do it in person
Yeah, I might pop a half an Adderall, I don't like Perkies
Put the phone on DND, I'm somewhere, ain't no service
I just slimed a nigga out today but it was worth it
I switch cars like bitches switch they purses
I slow down on features, I do verses if they worth it now
This shit done got deep and, let's be honest, we can't work it out
Peeped that lately you been actin' funny, wonder what it's 'bout
This shit really in me, hope you never doubt it, on gang
Voice of the hero
I'm the voice of the hero
Voice of the hero
Voice of the hero
See, I'm the voice, Baby, he the hero
Baby, he the hero
I'm the voice, but Baby, he the hero
But Baby, he the hero
Lil Durk's song The Voice is an emotional track featuring Lil Baby that delves into their personal experiences and the battles they have faced. In the opening verse, Lil Durk raps about missing out on a year of his children's lives and coming to terms with it. He also opens up about feeling neglected on certain days when people failed to show up to his shows. Lil Durk then reflects on how seeing his uncle dying in his bed made him become reckless. He also talks about not sharing his medication and paying off his friends' bonds before buying a necklace. He expresses that family is essential and that he is not into fast cars. It's also revealed that he has a vomit-inducing experience due to consuming too much Percocet.
The chorus of the song features Lil Baby saying that he is the hero, while Lil Durk is the voice. In his verse, Lil Baby talks about how he wasn't trying to be anybody's idol but feels people are acting entitled after he puts them on. He mentions that he is tired from work but keeps doing it regardless. Lil Baby says that he is with his friend Ced and that he got two hundred dollars for a walk-through but still drills with his team. He stresses that he can never turn his back on his apartment and where he comes from. Lil Baby concludes by saying that he'll be the hero while Lil Durk is the voice, and they'll be rich forever if they play their cards right.
The song's lyrics are a reflection of the duo's battles and achievements in life. Both Lil Durk and Lil Baby have come from humble backgrounds but have now become successful, influential personalities in the music world. Their verses showcase their struggles with mental health, relationships, family, and addiction. The song's title, The Voice, reflects their understanding of how their music resonates with their fans and how they can use their voices to make a positive difference in people's lives.
