Beginning his career, from 2011 to 2012, Durk released his debut, un-official mixtape, I’m a Hitta which was released on August 26, 2011. On April 3, 2012, Durk released his sophomore mixtape, a sequel to his previous tape, I’m Still a Hitta. Durka later released his third mixtape on November 5, 2012, titled Life Ain’t No Joke
Like many drill artists, Durk’s early career was plagued with legal issues and accusations of violence. These issues eventually led to his shows being canceled.
From 2013 to 2015 Durk released a total of four projects, three mixtapes, and an album. October 10, 2013, marked the release of the first Signed to the Streets, one of Durk’s most notable mixtapes and the start of a series. In the summer of 2014, specifically July 4, Durk released a sequel to Signed to the Streets and released Signed to the Streets 2 featuring his “What You Do to Me”.
2015 would be an enormous year for Lil Durk as in July 2015, Durk released his debut studio album, Remember My Name which featured his Jeremih-assisted “Like Me.” Later that year, Durk released his sixth mixtape 300 Days 300 Nights which included his then-girlfriend, Dej Loaf-assisted, “My Beyoncé.”
From 2016 to 2017, Durk released a total of four solo projects and one collaborative project. On July 22, 2016, Durk released his sophomore studio album, Lil Durk 2X accompanied by features such as Future, Young Thug, Yo Gotti and more. Ending the year, Durk released They Forgot, his seventh mixtape.
Beginning 2017, in February, Durk released his seventh mixtape, Love Songs for the Streets, which is deemed as one of his most notable projects including features from Moneybagg Yo and YFN Lucci. Later that year in August, Durk released a collaborative EP with Lil Reese titled Supa Vultures; the project included his “Nobody Knows”. On October 19, 2017, Durk carried on with his Signed to the Streets series with the highly anticipated Signed to the Streets 2.5. The mixtape included the start of yet another song series titled “India” dedicated to his fiancé India Cox otherwise known as India Royale.
In 2018, Durk released two projects, he began with Just Cause Y'all Waited, Durk’s highest-charting mixtape peaking at #57 on the Billboard 200. Durk then released a sequel to Love Songs for the Streets titled Love Songs 4 the Streets 2. Durk was extremely successful prior to this album, however, many say that this exact album broke Durk into the mainstream rap industry as it had been his first project to chart in the top 10 of the Billboard 200.
2020 was an even better year for Lil Durk as he released his almost chart-topping Just Cause Y’all Waited 2 which peaked at #2 on the Billboard 200. It was later followed up with a deluxe.
The scars of violence run deep in Durk’s discography, particularly arising from the loss of OTF members Nunu (Nuski) and King Von at the hands of gunfire. Both artists are commemorated on his album The Voice, for which a deluxe version was released in 2021.
Anointing himself as the voice of the streets, Durk followed up this project with the release of the collaborative album The Voice of the Heroes with Lil Baby which brought the Chicago native artist his first #1 album.
Marking his first solo #1 album, in March 2022, Lil Durk released a melodramatic take on the deaths of his loved ones through an album titled 7220. The album became Durk’s first solo project to top the charts.

Don't take a pic when we together that′s a fed shit
I spent over 4-5 racks on these glasses (on these glasses)
I want that purple with my color just like Kansas
Make sure I'm super fly because the cameras (yuh)
Put a mm mm mm mm inside a Tropicana
Sway don't but the whole hood got the answers (yeah yeah)
Black power in my blood my cousin Lee a panther (let′s get it)
God took away my niggas they don′t make more (yeah)
You take one of mine we gon' take four (do-do-do)
Bitches screaming fake love like a Drake tour (turn up)
We gon′ pull up in that truck and it's paid for (turn up)
How you flexing with your homie, shit it ain′t yours (let's get it)
Cleaning pasta out the trap but I hate yours (gang)
BJ took mine he catch a case I take yours (brother)
Hitting that dope I gotta take dome (dome)
I′m from the trenches make me hate storms (Chiraq)
How the fuck you on top and you don't make noise? (gang gang)
I brought a hellcat from the trenches and I made it roar (skrt)
We violent, shawty don't be too silent (yeah yeah)
She don′t like public, all her pages be private (yeah yeah)
Before I pay a nigga bills I buy fashion (nah)
I fuck her off a perky pill got me lasting (yeah yeah)
Ain′t no way that hate can overpower love (woah)
Ain't no money in the world that can buy you trust (woah)
Used to look up to them niggas they in the back of us
Used to be my brother, show me they color
True colors, yeah your true colors (true colors)
True colors, yeah your true colors (true colors)
Niggas sneak dissing while you show your true colors (true colors)
Even with these shades I can see your true colors
I can′t put no niggas over mine, I'ma over grind
Over time, for more chains I′ll over shine
I'm screaming free ′em even if appeals denied
Gave 'em guns just to get some lil' more time
Like drinking lean shit way too cold with ice
Kidnap your son got me like I′m Uncle Ice
Your ass ain′t right, keep my strap like a dyke
They shot my brother, we was in it all night
They don't listen you ain′t no politician
And I was broke ain't have no pot to piss in
Don′t fuck with too many niggas had to keep my distance
When I do come around I swear I feel attention
I love my cousin Iris man I swear I miss her
Her daughter look just like her I see her and kiss her
My daddy never seen my kids, only through some pictures
At the time I was fighting cases so I couldn't visit
Ain′t no way that hate can overpower love
Ain't no money in the world that can buy you trust
Used to look up to them niggas they in the back of us
Used to be my brother, show me they color
True colors, yeah your true colors
True colors, yeah your true colors
Niggas sneak dissing while you show your true colors
Even with these shades I can see your true colors
No, no, no, no
The lyrics in Lil Durk's song, True Colors, address themes of loyalty and betrayal, ultimately emphasizing the idea that true colors will always eventually be revealed. The song speaks to the idea of friendship and the desire for loyalty, but also expresses the harsh reality that relationships can fall apart, and friends can easily become enemies. The opening lyrics talk about taking risks and engaging in risky behavior, such as having a threesome with a friend's partner, but not taking pictures to avoid getting caught. Durk mentions spending money on flashy accessories, like purple-tinted glasses, to enhance his appearance for the camera. He even talks about violence and the loss of friends, explaining that if anyone messes with one of his own, they will retaliate.
Durk also mentions some personal struggles and societal issues in his song. For example, he talks about how Black power runs through his blood, with his cousin Lee being a part of the Black Panther movement. He also discusses poverty and the remnants of his humble upbringing, including the need to keep grinding and making money, as well as the difficult relationships he’s had with family members. Throughout the song, Durk's vocals stay low-key, and the beat stays relatively simple, creating a solemn and introspective mood.
Overall, True Colors is a powerful message about the importance of honesty and loyalty in interpersonal relationships, as well as the repercussions of disloyalty and betrayal. Lil Durk's honest and raw approach to the topic makes it clear why he's such a prominent figure in modern rap.
