The Rose
Lil Rounds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Some say love it is a river
That drowns the tender reed
Some say love it is a razor
That leaves your soul to bleed

Some say love it is a hunger
An endless aching need
I say love it is a flower
And you it's only seed

It's the heart afraid of breaking
That never learns to dance
It's the dream afraid of waking
That never takes the chance
It's the one who won't be taken
Who cannot seem to give

And the soul afraid of dying
That never learns to live

When the night has been too lonely
And the road has been too long
And you think that love is only
For the lucky and the strong
Just remember in the cold, cold, cold winter
Far beneath the bitter snows
Lies the seed
That with the sun's love

In the spring
Becomes the rose

Overall Meaning

In Lil Rounds's song The Rose, the lyrics explore various interpretations of what love is. The opening lines suggest that love can be both destructive and overwhelming, compared to both a river that can drown a tender reed and a razor that can leave one's soul to bleed. However, the following lines contrast these dark interpretations of love with a vision of love as a flower that takes root within a person and blossoms into something beautiful. The final lines of the verse emphasize this idea of a seed being nurtured and transforming with the help of the sun's love, suggesting that love can be a source of growth and change.

The chorus of the song takes a more poignant turn. It suggests that fear can inhibit one's ability to fully experience love. Fear of breaking, fear of waking up from a dream, fear of being taken or giving too much, and fear of dying can all prevent someone from fully living and loving. The repetition of the phrase "that never learns" emphasizes the idea that without taking risks and facing fears, one cannot truly experience the transformative power of love.

The final verse of the song provides a message of hope. During difficult times when love may feel elusive or unattainable, it is important to remember that love is always present, even if it lies dormant like a seed buried beneath the snow. With time and patience, the love inside each person can blossom and transform, much like the way that a rose blooms after a long, cold winter.

Oh another request: could you start uploading compilations of the voting numbers at the end of the shows? They were always interesting to listen to because they were from rehearsals and sounded different

Joy xx

I keep coming back to this song. Comforting.

Rodrigo Chacon

I’m sure Simon Cowell can sing it a lot better he’s never that harsh in BGT. Whatever he knows nothing. This is by far the best rendition to the song. Period

is it just me or did this season seem like the downfall of the black female singers from Season 8 to Season 11 was no black female finalist that made to top 5 Lil place 7th,Jasmine place 12th/13th in Season 9 Paige (who the judges kept saying she was the best female singer) placed 11th in Season 10 Naima placed 10th/11th and Ashthon placed dead last 13th and in Season 11 there was no black female semifinalists at all if my memory was correct Season 12 winner Candice was cut in that bogusly random Vegas Cut and Randy excuse for that was the competition was so tight that season yeah because Brielle Von Hegel and Shannon Magrane were SO TALENTED that by season 12 to force a female winner by picking weak male singers in the top 10 and pushing Angie and Amber as the most deserving to win that all I'm going to write for now

What seasons of American idol rewind do you have? I love the contestants perspective on them! Do you have any rewind performances from Ryan Starr, Diana DeGarmo or Carrie Underwood?

Domeju

I'm not 100% sure how many rewinds I have. I was trying to upload performance videos with the judges comments and ended up finding rewind videos. As for your other request, you wanna see the phone numbers for after the show? Like all of them? I can try, but it might take a while.

Thanks for take my request.
Lil, Lil, Lil... This was the only time she tried to get out of the karaoke zone by doing something else with the song. The idea was..... interesting?.IDK if ´´The Rose`` was the song to take those liberties.
Quentin gave her a great adivice. But her execution... She had problems both on the simple/first half and also when she infused her´´church/r&b` take.. Apart of a couple strong notes, the rest was either flat or missed notes.
To make it worst, she wasnt able to take judges feedback. They overhiped her so much more that she deserved early on that when she didnt got the praise she expected, she got mad. But they were just right, she wasnt delivering.
