Kangkung dari Cimanggis
Lenggang lenggang lenggang kangkung
Kangkungnya dari Cimanggis
Memang nasib yang paling beruntung
Dapat pacar tak punya kumis
Memang nasib yang paling beruntung
Lenggang lenggang lenggang lenggang kangkung
Kangkung dari Jakarta
Eh lenggang lenggang lenggang kangkung
Kangkungnya dari Jakarta
Memang nasib paling tak beruntung
Punya ayah suka main mata
Memang nasib paling tak beruntung
Punya ayah suka main mata
Lenggang lenggang lenggang lenggang kangkung
Kangkung di atas peti
Lenggang lenggang lenggang kangkung
Kangkungnya di atas peti
Memang nasib tak beruntung
Punya nenek suka main tali
Memang nasib tak beruntung
Punya nenek suka main tali
Lilis Suryani's song "Lenggang Kangkung" is a vibrant piece that blends playful melodies with underlying social commentary. The recurring refrain of "lenggang kangkung" evokes the image of the kangkung vegetable, which is significant in Indonesian cuisine and culture. The phrase itself carries a rhythmic, almost dance-like quality, suggesting light-heartedness and joy. The repetition serves to both anchor the song's melody and to emphasize the cultural significance embedded in the references to kangkung, which can symbolize simplicity and roots to one's heritage. The references to different regions like Cimanggis and Jakarta weave a narrative of local pride, illustrating how local produce connects to identity and tradition.
As the song continues, the lyrics juxtapose the carefree refrain with the more serious pronouncement about luck and fortune. The mention of love and relationships—the luck of having a partner without a mustache—carries a humorous undertone, playfully critiquing societal norms. Here, "tak punya kumis" can symbolize youthful innocence and perhaps a longing for simplicity in love, suggesting that fleeting connections can be more desirable than relationships laden with complications. This interplay of fortune and misfortune continues throughout the song, reflecting on how perceptions of luck are often tied to superficial traits and expectations in relationships—demonstrating the societal pressures that individuals might face.
The contrasts of fortunate and unfortunate circumstances extend to familial relationships as well, where the song captures the complexities of family dynamics. The lines about having a father "suka main mata" (likes to flirt) and a grandmother "suka main tali" (likes to play with strings) illustrate the impacts of familial behavior on one's perception of fortune. The father’s flirtations could indicate instability or infidelity, which could lead to feelings of insecurity or heartbreak for those involved, while the grandmother’s innocent games signify the more naive or traditional aspects of family life. These contrasting portrayals highlight the multifaceted nature of luck—sometimes it’s about the influence of one’s family, and other times it refers to the whims of fate in the romantic realm.
Overall, "Lenggang Kangkung" is both a playful celebration of Indonesian culture and a stark reflection on the deeper implications of luck in personal relationships. It cleverly encapsulates the nuances of living in a society where superficial traits often dictate perceptions of value, love, and familial reputation. Through humor, it comments on the human experience—navigating relationships, both romantic and familial, filled with expectations and societal judgments. In doing so, the song resonates with audiences, reminding them to find joy and lightheartedness amidst the complexities of life, while still acknowledging the various forms of luck that shape individual journeys.
