Lover
Lilium Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She got dresses and left that morning
In her hair the autumn rain
She didn't leave a number
Wouldn't tell me her last name
She said don't fall in love with me
If you want to be my lover

Chased her up through Johnson city
Led a bloodhound by the trail
I followed her to Harlan
Where the coal dust showed her trail
She said don't fall in love with me
If you want to be my lover

Her heart ain't stuck on Dixie

Where the roads are paved in bone
Her heart don't hinge on Dixie
And her words are sticks and stones
She said don't fall in love with me
If you want to be my lover

Caught that girl up on mountain
Fed her earth beneath the clouds
I didn't hear the thunder
Through her pleas, they weren't too loud

She said don't fall in love with me
If you want to be my lover

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Lilium's song "Lover" tell the story of a man who falls in love with a mysterious woman who he meets one autumn morning. She leaves no contact information and won't reveal her last name. Despite his efforts to find her, she repeatedly tells him not to fall in love with her if he wants to be her lover. He chases her through Johnson City and Harlan, following her trail to where the coal dust shows he has found her hiding place. It becomes clear that her heart isn't "stuck on Dixie" and the words she speaks are harsh and unforgiving.

The man finally catches up with the woman on a mountain and "feeds her earth beneath the clouds". However, despite her pleas, he disregards her warning to not fall in love with her if he wants to be her lover. The song speaks to the idea that sometimes we meet people who we become fascinated with, despite the knowledge that they may not be the right fit for us. It also deals with the idea of chasing something that we know may not be good for us, and the danger of ignoring warnings and signs that point to those pitfalls. Altogether, "Lover" is a cautionary tale about falling for someone who may not have our best interests at heart.

The band is Pascal Humbert and Jean-Yves Tola (16 Hp minus DEE). This song is written by Jim Kalin (music) & Tom Barman (lyrics). Kalin plays slide guitar on it and Barman sings it. Two lines stuck with me from first listening: "I followed her to Harlan / where the coal dust showed her trail..." & "Her heart ain't stuck on Dixie / where the roads are paved in bone..." Thanks for posting this, mariabas.

Song is written by Jim kaolin. Lyrics too. Palin sings both parts. There is no Tom B in this, though he would have been welcomed had he been in that trailer up in the snow that Sunday afternoon this was recorded.
