Linda Perry was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, the daughter of Portuguese-American Alfred Xavier Perry (1928-2005), an engineer and a musician and Brazilian-born Marluce Perry. Her mother has worked as a model, designer, and private detective. Linda has six siblings; five brothers (Jay, Solomon, Mark, Marcel, and John) and a sister (Sally).
Perry spent her youth struggling with kidney disease and then addiction, before focusing on music. Growing up in an artistic and musical household, the young Perry displayed musical talent and interest from an early age. Her first song was "Pity Girls", at the age of 15 (according to an interview from ASCAP in the middle of 2003).

It looks like your gonna cry,
Is everything alright?
Are your days
Dropping you in a hole
No signals no signs
No reasons or rhymes
And just when you thought you'd be down on your knees
And we'll just
Fly away
Fly away
Don't you need to get higher
Baby baby baby
I wanna get close to you
But I'm so afraid
Honey, I'm so afraid
That one day you'll wake up and realize your wasting time, your sweet time
When I pick up the phone
You're not alone
And there I'll be standing wondering what's wrong
I'll say oh baby take me along
And we will
Fly away
Fly away
Don't you need to get higher
No no no no
I don't know how you feel
Talk to me baby
Come with me baby
Come with me baby
And we will
Fly away
Fly away
Yes we need to get higher
The lyrics to Linda Perry's song Fly Away seem to be about a woman who is struggling with the challenges of life. The opening lines "Woman, how do you feel? It looks like you're gonna cry, is everything alright?" suggest that the woman is not in a good place and may be feeling sad and overwhelmed. The following lines indicate that she may be feeling stuck or trapped as the days are "dropping [her] in a hole." She is looking for a way out, but can't seem to find any signals or signs that promise relief. The lyrics say, "No reasons or rhymes" which implies that there is no logic or explanation to why she is feeling this way, and this is leading her to a state of despair.
The chorus of the song offers a solution: to fly away. The repetition of the phrase "Fly away" emphasises that the solution is to escape, to leave everything behind and start anew. The lyrics say, "Don't you need to get higher" which could be interpreted as the need to lift oneself up, to elevate oneself from the negative emotions and situations. The second verse again shows the concern of the singer for the woman, who seems to be afraid to take risks and go after what she wants. The lyrics say, "I wanna get close to you, but I'm so afraid, honey, I'm so afraid, that one day you'll wake up and realize you're wasting time, your sweet time." The singer wants the woman to take a chance, to take a leap of faith and stands ready to join her.
Overall, the message of the song seems to be about taking risks and not being afraid to fly away from difficult situations. The song encourages the listener to trust in themselves and to not be afraid to follow their dreams.

I find Linda's voice range and powerful projection reminds of another singer I admired long ago. That singer's name was Janis Joplin, may she rest in peace ✝️.
