Bewitched Bothered And Bewildered
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He's a fool and don't I know it
But a fool can have his charms
I'm in love and don't I show it
Like a babe in arms

Love's the same old sad sensation
Lately, I've not slept a wink
Since this half-pint imitation
Put me on the blink

I'm wild again
Beguiled again
A simpering, whimpering child again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, am I

Couldn't sleep and wouldn't sleep
When love came and told me
I shouldn't sleep
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, am I

Lost my heart but what of it
He is cold, I agree
He can laugh but I love it
Although the laugh's on me

I'll sing to him
Each spring to him
And long for the day when I'll cling to him
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, am I

Men are not a new sensation
I've done pretty well, I think
But this half-pint imitation
Put me on the blink

I've sinned a lot
I'm mean a lot

But now I'm like sweet seventeen a lot
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered, am I

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Linda Ronstadt's "Bewitched Bothered and Bewildered" are about a woman who has fallen deeply in love with a man who is, in her own words, a "fool". Despite his obvious shortcomings, she is unable to resist his charms, and finds herself "wild again, beguiled again, a simpering, whimpering child again". The woman is fully aware that she has lost her heart to a man who is, at best, indifferent to her affections - he is "cold", and is more likely to laugh at her than to return her feelings. Nevertheless, she loves him all the same, even though "the laugh's on me".

The song is full of contradictions and mixed emotions - the woman is "bewitched, bothered, and bewildered", a state of frenzied infatuation that leaves her unable to sleep, but also willing to sing to her beloved and "long for the day when I'll cling to him". She is aware that she has "sinned a lot" and is "mean a lot", but the joy and pain of her love for this man has made her feel "like sweet seventeen a lot". Ultimately, the lyrics suggest that love is not always rational or straightforward, and that sometimes we find ourselves falling head over heels for someone who is anything but perfect.

After one whole quart of brandy
Like a daisy, I'm awake
With no bromo-seltzer handy
I don't even shake
Men are not a new sensation
I've done pretty well I think
But this half-pint imitation
Put me on the blink
I'm wild again, beguiled again
A simpering, whimpering child again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I
Couldn't sleep and wouldn't sleep
When love came and told me, I shouldn't sleep
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I
Lost my heart, but what of it
He is cold I agree
He can laugh, but I love it

Put me on the blink
I've sinned a lot, I'm mean a lot
But I'm like sweet seventeen a lot
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I
I'll sing to him, each spring to him
And worship the trousers that cling to him
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I
When he talks, he is seeking
Words to get, off his chest
Horizontally speaking, he's at his very best
Vexed again, perplexed again
Thank god, I can be oversexed again
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - am I
Wise at last, my eyes at last,
Are cutting you down to your size at last
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more
Burned a lot, but learned a lot
And now you are broke, so you earned a lot
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered - no more
Couldn't eat, was dispeptic
Life was so hard to bear
Now my heart's antiseptic
Since you moved out of there
Romance, finis. your chance, finis.
Those ants that invaded my pants, finis.
Bewitched, bothered and bewildered

A portion of the original lyrics from the 1940 show, "Pal Joey":

After one whole quart of brandy/Like a daisy I awake/With no bromo-seltzer handy/I don't even Shake.
Men are not a new sensation/I've done pretty well I think/But this half-pint imitation/Puts me on the blink:
I''m wild again, beguiled again/
A whimpering, simpering child again/
Bewitched etc.
'Couldn't sleep/
And wouldn't sleep/
Until I could sleep where I shouldn't sleep:
Bewitched, etc.

When he talks he is seeking/
Words to get off his chest/
Horizontally speaking/
He's at his very best.

I'll cling to him'/
Each spring to him/
And worship the trousers that cling to him:'
Bewitched, etc.

And more to that effect. It's a ribald song, not a "simpering" song, as so many would have it.
NB: Lorenz Hart was indeed hipper and more sexually liberated than more contemporary singers, Jeez! Maybe because he was gay! Probably.

@maurahobart8414

This is such a classic song by the brilliant Rodgers and Hart. Linda puts her own unique spin on it and I love it!

@MamaJacqueroo

We will still have her wonderful voice on audio; her sweet voice and talent and songbook is her legacy. I love you Linda Ronstadt.

@the_resourceful

@stevefackrell4132

Always associate this song with Ella Fitzgerald but this is a fine performance.
She is a wonderfully versatile vocal talent and one beautiful lady.
Very sad to learn recently she had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s and wish her well in coming to terms with this terrible illness.

@edithcarter3554

I associate with Barbra Streisand as she sings it on her third album. Love this song.

@MamaJacqueroo

I miss her beautiful music. Thank God we can still listen to this.

Back in the day, Linda Ronstadt was this music lover's favorite artist. Heatwave was my favorite, but I loved them all. I have two very musically talented children who rock, and, especially my 14 year old daughter, does musicals as well. I have heard this song, liked it, but when I saw Linda had covered this, I just had to listen. I was absolutely wowed!!! So beautiful!!! It definitely departed from her normal stuff, but I am absolutely so impressed with her voice and technique on this! I'm hearing her sustaining... vibrato... sliding back out... sustaining... with ease and power. I would have never recognized it as her, and yet I'm not at all surprised either. As I've see a number of those she worked with most say, she could sing anything! This may be the most beautiful of all! Any critic... I can only imagine... criticized this because she did not do this exclusively. They must not have liked her other style. That's what is termed prejudice... cause this song is absolutely impressive!

@SuperCarver2011

I don't understand why  some of these "self appointed critics" are knocking her for attempting a well known American Standard,  that has been performed by countless others and then trying to compare this performance tto others. Her voice is
unique and  so is her style..it's easy listening after all.
