Don't Know Much
Linda Ronstadt Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look at this face I know the years are showing
Look at this life I still don't know where it's going

I don't know much but I know I love you
That may be all I need to know

Look at these eyes they never seen what matters
Look at these dreams so beaten and so battered

I don't know much but I know I love you
That may be all I need to know

So many questions still left unanswered
So much I've never broken through
And when I feel you near me,sometimes I see so clearly
That only truth I'll never know is me and you

Look at this man so blessed with inspiration
Look at this soul still searching for salvation

I don't know much but I know I love you
That may be all I need to know

I don't know much but I know I love you
That may be all I need to know

I don't know much but I know I love you
That may be all there is to know

Overall Meaning

In Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville's song "Don't Know Much," the lyrics describe a person who is aging and reaching a point in their life where they realize they do not have all the answers. They question the purpose of their life and the meaning behind their dreams, yet despite all of this doubt and confusion, they still feel an unwavering love for someone. The chorus repeats that the person may not know much, but they know that they love the other person, and maybe that is all they need to know.

Throughout the song, the lyrics express a deep sense of uncertainty and searching for answers. The singer acknowledges that they have never seen what truly matters and have many questions left unanswered. They admit to feeling beaten and battered, like their dreams are just out of reach. Despite this, they hold on to the belief that love is enough to navigate these difficulties.

The final verse speaks about a man who is inspired, yet still searching for salvation. This could be interpreted as the singer looking to this person they love for inspiration and hope. The repetition of the chorus at the end drives home the message that, despite all of life's uncertainties, love is a constant source of comfort and guidance.

Don't forget their other duet,
All my Life.
Am I really here in your arms?
It's just like I dreamed it would be....
I feel like we're frozen in time;
And you're the only one I can see....
(Chorus)
Hey....I've looked all my life, for you;
Now you're here...
Hey...I've spent all of my life, with you..
All my life

I never really knew how to love,
Just hoped somehow I'd see...
Asked for a little help above,
Send that angel, down to me ....

Chorus
Hey...I've looked all my life, for you
Now you're here....
Hey....I've spent all my life, with you...
All my life

I never knew I could feel a love so tender,
I didn't think I could let those feelings show...
But now my heart is on my sleeve,
And this love will never leave...
I know, I know.....

Hey, I've looked all my life, for you...
And now you're here....
Hey I've spent all my life with you...
All my life ....

I remember this song playing in my moms Van driving to a camping trip which I brought my neighbor friend. I told her, one day when we get married this will be our song. We both went separate ways, different colleges, medical schools, and reunited 30 years later, and I kept my promise and married her to this song! Our daughter was just born this July!

Still brings me to tears here 30+ years later, as I lost the love of life, Teresa, to breast cancer. This was,"our" song that was supposed to be our first husband/wife dance...we came close...within days...and the good Lord took her away. I will see you in heaven very soon, Teresa Marie. Your heart is still within me.
